For a good 4 to 5 years I've been on Be & o2 using a Belkin 7633 router which use the excellent Broadcom chipset. As I'm now thinking of making the jump to Plusnet I was wondering how Broadcom based routers fare with regards to connection speed and reliability on the ADSL2+ service?

Well it's 50/50 whether I'll take the plunge for fibre instead, but it's good to know anyway.

What's the problem with the fibre option? Just the price, or the 18-month contract?

Could be neither, but the lack of availability at the present time, so debating whether to wait for fibre or take basic ADSL and find fibre enabled for their area a day / week / month later.
I had been checking my local exchange on superfast-openreach 'where and when' checker, and it was saying Sept 2012 for a while, then Dec 2012 and then March 2012. Early in January I queried this with Openreach and was told the date just rolls on 3 months if exchange not enabled.
Was further told it'd be May 2013. Now see that the exchange is enabled but only area that is currently able to place order is some distance away (where Virgin is present and active). It's something of a lottery as to how long one may need to wait to see if fibre available from nearest set of cabinets.

The fibre install would be problematic due to position of the master and where I'd prefer to be. It may take more than a cuppa and a packet of hobnobs as persuasion. . .

What about the promise of eternal fast internets

No problem around here amongst the heather we won't be getting FTTC or 21CN exchanges (in the near future)
'Scuse my ignorance but I assume you need an exchange to be 21CN before OR will roll out fibre?

'Scuse my ignorance but I assume you need an exchange to be 21CN before OR will roll out fibre? Or a neighbouring exchange that can serve your cabinet?

Well perhaps the Eng. could save my soul at the same time. . . That would be worth at least a free choice from the Celebrations tin.

(Well, strictly speaking, there needs to be at least one in the country, but there are already more than that. They've also been rolling out fibre for some time).
