been on fibre at 37m since tuesday and since last night having problems with some web pages not loading very quick ( msn taking 15 seconds to load ) normally loads straight away even on o2 at 8m

Does the speed improve late at night and first thing in the morning?

My tests show between 6am and noon I get 72mbs the throughput then drops to about 40mbs by early evening and takes a right dive and I get a result like this

I haven't got a clue what is causing this PN Support have passed it onto the faults team.

just been on laptop and web pages load faster and thats on wi fi
strange the only things i did was install the new spybot and installed java so i could run speedtest so disabled them and no difference.
might try and uninstall them

uninstalled spybot no difference so went to control panel and started looking at network and opened internet options and connections and found the problem, a proxy server had been set up on the lan. as soon as i stopped it everything was back to normal.
so what set up the proxy server?
the only program i had installed was spybot

The kind of behaviour you describe is the same kind of issue you get when there are DNS problems, rather than a problem with the basic throughput. The few-second pauses happen while the PC fails to contact a DNS server, and then falls back to an alternative.

I guess this could explain it if the browser fails to connect to the proxy, then, after a 15 sec timeout, falls back to a direct connection instead.

And why did you choose to install a spybot?

Almost certainly a Virus infection I would say - especially as you haven't installed any software that would have done it.

I think the op is referring to Spybot Search and Destroy - an anti-Spyware program.

I would run a malware bytes scan as it's quite suspect & also a standard scan with your normal antivirus.

I have used spybot for years and was was changing from version 2 to 2.1

ran full eset smart security scan and nothing came up

I've used Spybot for years and it's never set up a proxy server, but I'm only on v. 1.6.2.

Do the malware bytes full scan too just to be safe.

Not that damaging, unless there actually is a trojan that has set up a proxy on your own machine.

Without a proxy, it probably would have the effect you saw.
