Suddenly my upload speed has dropped from around 16-17mbps to 5mbps or thereabouts. When I was first connected to Plusnet the DLM was off and gave me a 67/18 connection (as reported by various speed test sites). My download speed has dropped since DLM kicked in (One day it was 55 down) to around 63mbps on average. Right now I am getting close to 64 down but only 5 up. Ping times are good.
I was using an unlocked HG612 to monitor things and noticed my upload sync had also dropped from 20 to 18 and I was apparently getting an 18mbps estimated max upload speed (down says 67 max). Graphs seem OK from what I could tell (Only just started graphing though).
I've switched back to the ECI modem for the moment and same results on speed tests.
Is someone stealing all the upload bandwidth on my cabinet or something?

Hi, I just booted up PC and went to try a speed test and results are terrible.. I was getting 68.5/18.5Mbps and now I am getting 14/14Mbps..
My ping has also climbed an extra 5ms making is about 25ms
I am having page timeouts..???
I am using my supplied ECI modem and Technicolor Router.
I Have not messed with things. Although now maybe a good time to swap modems to use my HG612 (Unlocked) ??
I thing PN maybe having issues with their Traffic management platform as per the stats alerts the other day (maybe ?)

Odd, you've an ongoing connection just shy of 22 days and we can't see any profile updates on BTs side since late May so I'm not sure it's a line issue. Guessing this is via a wired connection rather than wireless? Are other machines on the network also seeing the same issues?

Yeah up for almost 22 days. The only change on the line was when I asked for IP Profile change which was sweet.
I am just running a few test on my laptop atm.
I was referring to speedtest.net for my ping times off the Ealing test server. The one which I have always used. I have also noticed that the map on speedtest.net has changed where the closest server is to me.. It always used to be default to green icon over London but now its somewhere in Birmingham.. Something has happened - somewhere..
The BQM is what I should be using to measure my pings but I forget about it..
I cant even complete a speedtest using ThinkBB.. The BTW Speedtester is showing 19/16Mbps (Approx)..

I know that PN were having issues with one of their gateways. but the status says all is working fine.. How do you find the gateway which i connect to??
Is it the second IP in a tracert hop?

We've been doing regular maintenance for upgrades which disconnects people. When was the problem?

Well I can see from our side that we've had the first profile update on your line since the 24th May, though it's still over 70Mb/s. What are BT speed tests reporting? Also, is it still slow now we're outside of peak times?
Just trying to ascertain what might be causing it is all :/
|
|
|
We were? When?
We've been doing regular maintenance for upgrades which disconnects people. When was the problem?
Yep, sure I believe it all started the other day sometime.. Anyway you guys were all over that situation and I thought my speed issues may have been residual effect of this upgrade/issue. Hence the disconnect/reconnect of my connection (As mentioned below)
@orbrey
During the early afternoon (10th/07/13) I was having not too good BTW results, well I say not too good it was something like 21/15Mbps my upstream speed only taking a little hit (down from 18.5Mbps).
I noticed from one of the later BTW speedtests that my Max attainable speed was 70.76Mbps down from 73Mbps (approx)
This is not reflected in my PN member portal section > High Speed Broadband info. (Just a minor nit picking there..)
Anyway, I decided to disconnect/reconnect my connection via my router to refresh everything to see if this would help (it didn't - keep in mind this *was* done during peek time) I did get a good decrease in my ping times about 18ms - See BQM
I gave up on things last night thinking to give things time to settle or whatever.
I have just jumped back on and everything is almost back to what it was (normal/great)
Just a side observation. when I was testing my connection I found I am getting download errors, or should I say downloads stopping after 350Mb or about 30secods at full speed. I have tried the TBB sample download files and also http://proof.ovh.net/files/ and across various ports 80 81 8080 but still unable to test sample files. I can get the 100Mb file but when I try the 1GB file it times out after the above mentioned data transfer of 350Mb or about 30Seconds. Again, this is all done during peek times so I will have to wait to see if this still persists during off-peek hours.

Hi,
Definitely odd... your latest connection has been ongoing for a day and a half and I can't see any drops, though will make sure the speed profiles match in case anything's happening as a result of that.
What time did you reset the router, out of interest? I ask because as above the last reconnection we've seen on your line was half past 9 in the evening on Wednesday (10th).
Hopefully the speed reset will help with the downloads, though I can't think of a reason why they'd stop as they are doing - were the speed tests the only things happening on the line at the time?
|
|
|
@orbrey,
were the speed tests the only things happening on the line at the time
YES
I reset connection at about that sort of time. I have Uptime: 0 days, 17:18:55 - from the time of this post. So about 9:30 (approx) Wed. 10th I disconnected/reconnected via router admin page. You can clearly see this in my BQM for that date where my ping time drops to about 10-18ms from 20-25ms which is always a good thing
Regarding my actual speeds they are, well.. SWEET
My BTW Speedtest's have dropped slightly but that is a couple of meg. however overall my actual results seem to be very similar to what they were previous to my connection reconnect..
I am trying to get a short video clip so you can see for yourself what I mean about my downloads failing..
I am going to install Snagit/Camtasia and show you what I mean..
I am doing my test download via Firefox and also in chrome.
The only way to describe is, when I initiate the download it connects and then quickly ramps up to MAX speed of around 8.1 - 8.2 Mb/s Then after around about 30sec's it's like a hammer is knocking my test download from Max speed right the way down to really slow then it just stops.
My browser throws up a Download error. Now I have only tested this with OVH test files. *During peek hours* so whether this is DLM in hyper-drive I just don't know, you would be in a better position to answer that?
However this is also the case if I try to download a Fedora 4.2GB ISO disk image for 64-bit PC..
This is the Firefox error:
| Text | 1
23
| C:\Users\majika\Desktop\Fedora-19-x86_64-DVD.iso.part could not be saved, because the source file could not be read.
Try again later, or contact the server administrator. |
I have tried to save to both internal and External HDD's on my System even to my SSD I have checked I have plenty of disk space. both my primary partition for the temp files and the destination save directory.

Does the same thing happen if you try downloading your .ISO via a Bit Torrent client?
Brian
From September 2001 on BTopenworld Home 500/Home 1000/Home 2000. Then ADSLMax on <n>ildram. Moved to ADSL2+ from ADSL24. I'm now with plusnet. I'm not saying who I work for. Any opinions expressed here are my own.
|
|
|
I No problem with Torrents or FTP.. its just my HTTP transfers which actually terminate.
However I do see in my BT client when I hit a fast peer it ramps up my download speed really quickly but after about the same sort of time scale/transfer of data as mentioned in my previous post a similar sort of thing happens again.
The BT speed graph shows a big spike then a big trough and then is really slow getting back up to speed again.. kind of like the first couple of hundred megs of data is cached and allowed to burst down to my machine but then it gets hammered down.
Again, I haven't had a change to test during off-peek hours as of yet. Could this be PN Traffic management ?
|
|
|
|
There is no traffic management of the upstream

Upstream being?? From me > remote server or other the way around.
If you mean my upstream from my point of view, well that has been almost solid.. (18.5Mbps)

Yes, I am having almost identical issues as oddball and am trying to get with the PN Troubleshooting team. I have just filled out a report after raising a Support Ticket.
I Will keep you all posted on any info. and a possible fix.
DL Speed dropped from 68.5Mbps down to 63Mbps > 58Mbps > 53Mbps > 34Mbps > 29Mbps > 16Mbps
UL speed dropped from 18.5Mbps > 15.5Mbps mark..

If you phone support see if you can speak to Matt. He knows what he is talking about and won't fob you off if you can provide technical details. BTW It's well worth having the HG612 so you can basically throw this info back at them and hopefully get them to pester BT Wholesale (the devil themselves).

Just been msg'd by Plusnet stating an engineer visit is going to be booked. Not sure if this is required but will take it anyhow. If only to see if they can fathom the odd US SNRM behaviour (Doubt it though as I reckon it's REIN coming from an external source after unplugging everything in my place I could think of).
One thing I will ask when he visits is if he can call in for some resets (I know. I know don't laugh at the back).

Well here are the results from PN support (Matt) which seem to show no obvious faults on my line. It seems to have cleared up now
Since this all began I have had serious periods of slow downs and interrupted HTTP/FTP downloads. but now seems to have resumed almost back to its original state.. This is a good thing;
However, I would like to know why/what issues caused my service to be temperamental.

These tests don't really tell us a lot. Only true stats from the line and your modem will show that there is a real problem.
My Telnet stats apparently show that INP is on (noise protection) and I am getting a bit of noise possibly caused by REIN. Getting it investigated though can be an uphill struggle as trained REIN engineers are few and far between so BT don't like sending them out.

@Oddball
OK, I have an HG612 Modem which is unlocked.
I am in two minds whether or not to swap it with the ECI modem which I was provisioned with during my FTTC install with BTO?
I would love to be able to actually see the true line stats and not just rely on BTW tester results, etc
I did ask the engineer during the time of install if my cabinet would allow for a Hawawi modem or if the cab. will only support the ECI modems..
He said there is no issues between End-Users using either modem as the cabs can support both..
**Is there a way for me to check up to see which system is running on my cab Huawei/ECI systems**
So, my question is two fold: Since my connection is stable at present do you think its worth the chance of messing with the DLM on my line if I were to swap my ECI modem to HG612 ?
Secondly, If I change the modem from the officially supplied ECI modem over to the HG612 will this effect the levels of support I can receive from Plusnet due to the fact I'm using a "None-Standard" modem, equipment etc..
Lastly, Have you got any tips on how to best carry out the modem swap, like power cycling my modem, what steps should be followed and in which order as to not cause too many line errors to trigger DLM, etc. kind of like a dummy's guide

We can tell from one of the two main sets of stats you can get from the Huawei what is in the cabinet.
A straight swap of the two modems should not cause any issues. If here is a power button on the ECI, (I've never seen an ECI modem), then power it down. Otherwise just take out its power cable, then unplug the power cable from the mains, then disconnect from the VDSL cable.
I would then connect the Huawei to the VDSl cable and the Ethernet cable from the router. Plug the Huawei power supply into the mains and connect it to the Huawei modem. Sit back and wait for all the lights to sort themselves out. You should see the "Internet connected" indicator on your computer once the connection has set up.
PlusNet will not have any idea which modem is in use so no need to worry about that.

Make sure you can actually access the web interface on LAN port 2 of the HG612 before swapping over if it was purchased already unlocked (if you unlocked it yourself you will already know).
|
|
|
Engineer came out today. Not impressed. He seemed really clueless. He told me flat out he did not understand any of my terminology regarding errors. Refused a pair swap. Did a basic line test. Promised to get a DLM reset done (nothing yet) and basically left after a few minutes without doing much of anything.
I've spoken to Plusnet support who are waiting for the notes. Very helpful and polite thus far. I'm on a banded profile currently but the support guy (they have some fantastic people on support btw) said he would try and get it removed if he can.
It's a waiting game on these types of problems unfortunately.

@oddball I read a really good article/forum thread over on Kitz about REIN. I cant quite find the exact thread but its there somewhere.. Best you check it out yourself but in a nutshell:
If you got an AM/FM hand held radio tune it into AM 612Khz Freq. then go around the place looking for sources of REIN. Power down EVERYTHING on your main power box besides the main ring for the power sockets which you have your PC system running off. Then go on a walk around your house and see if you hear any changes to the baseline background noise if you get no luck detecting REIN on that 612Khz freq. then go up to the next harmonic frequency 612khz 1 1/2 and up again.. Or something to that effect.. Best you read up on kitz for exact methods.
@RobertoS As always, thanks for your no messing simple steps to swapping HG612 for ECI..
FYI, ECI modems have no power off button/switch, well, at least not my my model B-F0CuS Sub v-2FUb/r Rev B
You said PN cannot detect which modem I am using but what about the TR-069 CPE WAN Management Protocol or does TR69 only apply to the Router (Technicolor TG582n)
Lastly, what about the original PN T&C will changing to another CPE. Will swapping over my ECI to my HG612 affect my levels of technical support or maybe even breach my ToS, etc.. ?
I mean off the top of your head. I suppose I could go digging through the T&C documentation if I need to just thought you (or others) may know about this kind of thing.
Cheers.

All the unlocking does is change the firewall level on the modem from "BT" to "Standard". The modem is kosher.
|
|
|
You said PN cannot detect which modem I am using but what about the TR-069 CPE WAN Management Protocol or does TR69 only apply to the Router (Technicolor TG582n) It applies just to the router. It is the automated way of setting up the PPP session with your ISP, (PlusNet in this case). Nor do they mind if you use a different router -there is no compulsion to use the Plusnet one. Though they only guarantee help on PN-supplied routers. Lastly, what about the original PN T&C will changing to another CPE. Will swapping over my ECI to my HG612 affect my levels of technical support or maybe even breach my ToS, etc.. ? Not in any way whatsoever. What might do, though I'm not aware of it ever having happened, would be if you replaced both the Openreach modem and whatever "cable" router you choose with a combined modem/router, as none are yet approved by Openreach for FTTC connection.

Ah, maybe mine has a PTM entry with a Connection name of 1.301 and Service_List of TR069_Internet for BT Wifi with Fon.

Interesting . Mine doesn't have that on any of the directly viewable pages - i.e. without downloading the configuration file to inspect.
It does have a TR069 (CWMP) page as well but disabled.

Not in any way whatsoever. What might do, though I'm not aware of it ever having happened, would be if you replaced both the Openreach modem and whatever "cable" router you choose with a combined modem/router, as none are yet approved by Openreach for FTTC connection.
You say no combined modem/routers are officially supported but are there any available anyway? will a Fritzbox do the job ?
Anyone else looked into the combined modem/router solutions??
Thanks

There have been a fair few on these forums, seemingly with varying degrees of success and disappointment.
I did not use the word "supported". I used "approved". There is currently no Openreach product that permits replacement of an Openreach branded modem by anything other than another one.

The regular slowdowns every 12 hours were the reason I unlocked my modem in the first place. Solved by turning off TR069 and CWMP http://forums.thinkbroadband.com/fibre/t/4176203-hua...
