My setup is like this: master socket - cable - PlusNet box - cable - Apple Time Capsule
When I connect my laptop via wifi to the PlusNet box's wifi signal, I get speeds of around 2 to 3 MBPS. When I connect my laptop via wifi to the Apple Time Capsule's wifi signal, I get speeds of 12-15MBPS.
How is that possible? And how can I sort out this strange discrepancy?

Very simple - a rotten wireless signal from the Plusnet router

How far apart are the two routers?

Neither "PlusNet Box" nor "Apple Time Capsule" are anywhere near precise enough names to determine what hardware you have there. Without, nobody will be able to give a qualified answer.

Likely because the Time Capsule is basically just a much better wireless router than the one Plusnet give you for free. There's a good chance it's also using either a less congested wireless channel than the Plusnet router, or you're connecting to the much much less congested 5GHz wireless network it's likely making in addition to the 2.4GHz one.

Was just replying to last post in flat Well don't!
How can we make lots of posters click the relevant Reply button when you don't? We can usually work out what you are on about, but they cause mayhem and chaos.
What about the "email replies" facility? Always replying to the latest post screws that for two people.

I like the system on a lot of "flat only" forums (e.g. phpbb) whereby any post to a subscribed topic sends an email, but only one email until the topic is re-visited.
This nice concept was ruined by Lithium who send an email for every single topic reply regardless of whether the user has re-visited the topic or not.

Hi everyone, thanks for the replies...my responses are below.
How far apart are the two routers?
They're next to each other (they have to be, because they're connected via ethernet cable).
How am I supposed to know
Perhaps you know what channels they are on then?
The PlusNet box is on Auto channel 6. The Apple is on automatic.

It's a Technicolor TG582n and Time Capsule 802.11n (1st Gen) using firmware 7.6.4.

I just moved the boxes as far away as they can go and...no change in the Time Capsule's wifi speed. But the PlusNet box...has gone from 2MBPS to 17MBPS! Problem solved, I think. Although: I just tried a Skype call, and my side of the connection kept breaking up really, really badly (to the extent that it's better on Vodafone 3G).
