Slow speed following line fault

[link to this post]

My phone line and internet connection (FTTC) went down yesterday morning. Although the phone landline stayed down until this afternoon when an engineer came and fixed a problem which he said was about 300 metres away and underground, the router reconnected in the early hours of this morning and gave me back a usable internet connection. The phone is fine now, but my download speed is now only 7Mbps instead of my normal 15/16Mbps. I reported this using the Plusnet Online Help Assistant (Question #74315647), but just got a link to the usual Slow Speed Help information which doesnt really help in this instance. I feel sure that it should be possible to tickle something at the Plusnet end, and am not at all convinced that waiting 10 days would help.

What are the line stats reported by the router. Probably a high target noise margin as a result of instability

I guess that I would have to unlock the Openreach Modem to extract this sort of info, wouldn't I?

The OP states this is an FTTC connection, so unlikely to have readable router stats.

Yep. The answer is that, most likely, as a result of the line fault, the Openreach DLM system has capped the sync speed down. This *should* creep back on it's own. If no signs of doing so after a few days, get back on to Plusnet, and see if they can't raise an FTTC1 visit from Openreach.

OK. Thanks. I'll try and be patient and wait a few days to see what happens.

That's rather slow for FTTC. You must be miles from cab.

Yes. Pre FTTC I could only get 3mbps.

That would be due to your distance from the exchange, nothing to do with the distance from the cabinet. I think "miles" was a bit of an exaggeration, but it must be a fair distance away, do you know how far away your fibre cabinet is and what is your estimated speed?

Yes, I am aware of the difference in importance between distance from exchange and distance from cabinet. I am a long way from both points at about 5.5 km and 1.25 km. Normal reported expected speed from memory is up to 17.1 mbps, although I actually usually expect about 15-16 mbps.

Upon completion the BT Wholesale speed test currently gives the following error message: "Your speed test has completed and the results are shown above, however during the test an error occurred while trying to retrieve additional details regarding your service. As a result we are unable to determine if the speed you received during the test is acceptable for your service."

The service is usable, even if slower than normal, so I am prepared to wait a few to days to see if it improves.

Yes, "miles" was a bit of an exaggeration! More like a mile!

Hi Kam.

I've taken a look over the phone fault and it is showing that it is now resolved, however, I've done a test on you broadband connection and it's detecting a fault.

Could you run through our faults wizard http://faults.plus.net and we'll get this picked up and investigated?

Chris, I have run the test with a computer plugged directly in to the BT modem, and no background programs running (not even anti-virus). The result is the same with download speed of 6.67 Mbps, and upload speed of 0.67 Mbps.

We've got your logged fault ticket now, we'll test your line and update you with the details.

I'll keep an eye on it to see how it goes.

Ticket closed. "Multiple network connections reterminated", and "profile reset". I am now seeing the best speeds I have ever had. 18mbps may not be much for some of you, but I'm now more than content.
