Current PlusNet-supplied ADSL router - worth a punt ?

[link to this post]

I'm thinking about upgrading my broadband package and was wondering if the latest PlusNet-supplied ADSL router is worth a look for the price of the postage ?

My trusty old Netgear DG834G is still working (just needs the odd reboot) but it's not wireless N and a lot of my current wireless devices are. The solid walls in my house also limit the Netgear's range.

I'd need to be able to tweak it to allow PS3 game hosting (COD etc) though - is this easy/possible with the latest PN router ? I tried (and failed) to do this on the previous PN-supplied Thomson router, but the better interface on the old Netgear made this simple.

Cheers.

Personally, I'd forget the Technicolour router from Plusnet as they are, on the whole, rubbish and the RMA's on these are quite high. The postage being £5.99 but you get recontracted for another 12 months otherwise you pay the full £49.99. For this kind of money, you'd be better looking at say the Netgear DM111P-100ISS - Take a look at Amazon.

That rules out the Technicolor!

You could perhaps try a BT homehub 3 or 4.

I agree. My son couldn't get a wireless connection on his phone 20ft from the router!

I live in a 5-storey Victorian house with 4ft thick stone walls. Take it from me - the Technicolor as supplied by PlusNet is useless.

I've tried many, many routers over the last few months and the one I found best - and still use, is the ASUS DSL-N55U.

I can now use my Wireless 4 floors down in the basement!!

It would be nice if PN could offer a subsidised "proper" router for perhaps half price. I would be happy to pay £50 for one that would cost me £100 elsewhere and PN could probably buy in bulk at the lesser price. I still regret giving my "old" Netgear to my sister.......

I found that connection speeds were almost identical to my Billion 7800n (configured for 6dB margin), but...

My PC didn't see the router over Ethernet unless I manually downgraded the config from gigabit to 10/100. The LED on the back of the router didn't even light up.

The router itself is only 10/100, but it should force an automatic downgrade without having to be manually configured.

Given I run the Billion over a 10m extension from the master socket, I'm considering re-configuring the TG582n as modem-only, then connecting that over ethernet to the EWAN socket on the Billion.

cheers, Martin
