Plusnet and IRC

I'm currently deciding between the 2 fibre optic packages from either BT or Plusnet. I would like to go with plus.net (though I'm reluctantly on the tipping balance either way).

I just thought I'd ask do many people use IRC ?

I ask because I've been around IRC networks, mostly on Undernet, but also Dalnet and a few others for 20 years. I've op'ed and owned channels on those networks, and when kick/banning people for being in bad channels I've ever seen a plus.net ip address on there!?

What does a plus.net ip look like in written form, or does it use BT ip addresses?

So I'm wondering if plus.net people can get on the IRC networks as it seems very odd I've never noticed any ip from them. I scan everyone who enters the channels, thats part of my op job.

So are people active on the IRC networks with a plus.net account?

This post gives the IP blocks that PN used three years ago. I suspect they may have added some more by now.

This site ShieldsUP! will tell whether your IP has a Reverse DNS.

Thanks for the information. Reverse looking them up.. most of them keep in numbered form.I've never seen a plus.net letter/number address before. But if it keeps as the numbered version, which it seems likely to do then, I wouldn't recognise them as plus.net just by sight.

If you take a Static IP Address on Plusnet, (a one-off £5 not a monthly charge), you get three options for your Reverse DNS.

Have you ever used this very useful tool?

I usually use this site http://whatismyipaddress.com/ip-lookup

From the ones I looked up on the previous site that was posted, the ones I got to reverse look up.. I've never noticed a plus.net ip on the networks. That's why I was wondering is this an issue. Though if plus.net usually set the numbered version as the default no matter what then I probably have seen it but couldnt resolve it.

Anyways, it was just a thought as I do use a lot of IRC networking and it dawned on me to ask the question.

Typical dynamic IP example:

C:\>nslookup 46.208.120.50
Server: SkyRouter.Home
Address: 192.168.0.1

Name: 50.120.208.46.dyn.plus.net
Address: 46.208.120.50

I gave you the IP blocks because you asked about PN IP addresses. If you'd asked what the rDNS names look like I would have told you that instead

As RobertoS mentioned, there are three general settings for the name associated with a PN allocated IP address:

1. ww-xx-yy-zz.plus.com (or zz-yy-xx-ww.dyn.plus.net) where ww-xx-yy-zz are the IP address ww.xx.yy.zz
2. <username>.plus.com
3. <domain name>

Obviously the latter has no indication of ISP

Why does it matter? You won't kick them if they are with PN OR you'll kick them harder for being on PN?

It's obvious! PN users are so goody-goody they don't need kicking .

I see no technical reason why PN IPs should be prevented from IRC. It's so easy to get on.

Tell us which channels you op or own and we could soon change that!
