A sign of things to come or we are already there?

These things happen from time to time - even the very best are not immune. If it starts happening regularly then start to worry but a one off is not generally a cause for alarm.

Thanks. I am six months into my 18 month contract with Plusnet but some initial sloppiness with the setup and still long waiting times to support line are not boding well for a long-term commitment. Hoping for the better but we will see.

Plusnet is an interesting ISP and they have historically gone through peaks and troughs. They started as the techies ISP, then tried for mass market and hit issues with growth outperforming their ability to deal with it. They then sorted that and became a good mass market ISP. But, that has happened in cycles over the years and they go through periods where they seem to outgrow their capabilities and then take a little time to get back on track.

When they are on track they are a good ISP and good value. When they go through a trough they are probably not much worse than some of the very big ISPs.

Call times should improve soon when their new call centre comes on line. Again, that is part of growing pains and their growth has outpaced their capacity to manage that growth.

Likewise, but if it was a dns issue it would not have affected me anyway - I use 4 different dns servers, none of them PN's

Good thinking. Nothing amiss showing on my BQM either. (See my sig).

My broadband basic info/help site - www.robertos.me.uk | Domains,site and mail hosting - Tsohost.
Connection - Plusnet UnLim Fibre (FTTC). Sync ~ 59.4/14.4Mbps @ 600m. - BQM

Pings to DNS IPs and pings to other IP addys were not affected. The PPP connection was fine, with sync and the rest looking good.

Pings to URLs wouldn't work, nor would e-mail, web and the rest.

My BQM has had dropped packets since. Maybe I've got a worse gateway than prior. My first action when the problem came was to reboot router. frown

So what exactly was the problem. I see the register says " you may receive an error stating that your browser is unable to find the site specified" which sounds like it may have been a DNS issue which wouldn't affect me either as I don't us theirs.

It looks a bit that way from the usage graphs. A big drop in traffic, but the users online just displays some ups and downs between gateways as people reboot their routers to see if that fixes their problem.

Yes it was DNS, just look at the DNS Response Time Graph between 8:30am and 10:30 am.

Don't know for sure if it's related but it looks likes it's still happening this evening in central Glasgow. Nearly unusable with pages taking an age or failing to load

edit - ...aaannd 10 minutes after I post that everything returns to normal. Typical.

Possibly - I had just read the article and comments on El Reg and when I tried coming back here got nothing. Back now, though...

Well I spoke to someone on another exchange at the time, and they too had the issues. Identical to yesterday.

At this rate, I'll be setting up my own routing tables.

Could be, I'm sure the frequency of the wobble depends on the connection usage, I think Einstein summed it up as W = (tu)2 tongue smile

Removed, the issue was with the feed to the graphs, not the Plusnet service.

eh?

Are you sure it isn't just that the graph hasn't received all the data yet? What were you seeing?

It seems it was just a problem with the feed to the Collated Users Online graph. It is now normal, with no dips that occur when one goes down.
