24mbit ADSL 2+ 500m from the exchange :p *DELETED*

[link to this post]

I wrote a really long post but a little voice made me delete it

hrm, web reset plusnet n router after some instab freezes apparant firmware refresh, meanwhile bt engineer came along and told me 69.3/72 score on the line, 500m length to the exchange (slightly less), 2m differential in the lines.

6 days in to a 10 day retrain:

Uptime: 0 days, 18:04:55
DSL Type: ITU-T G.992.5
Bandwidth (Up/Down) [kbps/kbps]: 1,279 / 23,033
Data Transferred (Sent/Received) [GB/GB]: 27.35 / 674.99
Output Power (Up/Down) [dBm]: 12.6 / 0.0
Line Attenuation (Up/Down) [dB]: 8.3 / 13.5
SN Margin (Up/Down) [dB]: 8.1 / 3.0
System Vendor ID (Local/Remote): TMMB / ----
Chipset Vendor ID (Local/Remote): BDCM / IFTN

considered dmt tool /sn margin tweaks on a 2740b I acquired, then I read the next post

really happy with the speeds plus net. someone somewhere (ie plus net) needs to come up with a bb/adsl package where the phone line is cheap but restricted for light/non users of the actual voice comms service over the line

nice one all round on the speeds on the bdcm chipset router though . clap! clerp.

If you are used to playing with the SNRM on O2, be very careful on a BT Wholesale service like you are on now. In half an hour of playing, where the O2 system would ignore what you were doing, you could give yourself Interleaving (that would probably not revert to Fast Path) and a higher -sync-time noise margin.

The result of a higher sync-time margin is to reduce the effectiveness of your tweaking. From a 6dB figure to 3dB is a setting of 50%., but from 9dB which is the next step up that DLM may impose a 50% setting only brings you back to 6dB. If the DLM chose 12dB, then 50% >> 9dB.

Incidentally, anything you can do with DMT you can do with telnet. Scroll down this page. That should apply to any DMT compatible router, though the IP address may be different in the last two triplets.

My broadband basic info/help site - www.robertos.me.uk | Domains,site and mail hosting - Tsohost.
Connection - Plusnet UnLim Fibre (FTTC). Sync ~ 56.6/14.1Mbps @ 600m. - BQM

sky will prolly tempt me back some day with some crazy cashback offer, but honestly, plus net feels like home.

That's cuz you are one of the 10% of users who can get at least 16 Meg, as ASA intended.

It used to be up to 24
It still is, technically! It's just that ISPs can't advertise higher than the min. of what the top 10% can get.

Dunno where the '23 being the max' ever came into it.

I was playing with the 2740B (quite like it but it synced a bit slower initially) and this involved unplugging the ADSL and replugging it from the plus net supplied router

that standard router is now happily netting away at:

DSL Type: ITU-T G.992.5
Bandwidth (Up/Down) [kbps/kbps]: 1,279 / 23,369

Output Power (Up/Down) [dBm]: 12.6 / 0.0
Line Attenuation (Up/Down) [dB]: 8.3 / 13.5
SN Margin (Up/Down) [dB]: 8.1 / 3.0
System Vendor ID (Local/Remote): TMMB / ----
Chipset Vendor ID (Local/Remote): BDCM / IFTN

Loss of Signal (Local/Remote): 5 / 0

I am now even more impressed. Slightly flummoxed too as to the other router and what the hell to do with it smile going to have a curry and mull it over.

thanks plus net. My phone stays off the hook these days - could you fix it that makes internet cheaper? smile))

edit: my speedtest on tbb results are around 19.1 Mbps. That's a little lower than I would have liked to see given the sync speed I'm getting above. Does the maths work like this or was there some shaping or contention at the ISP end (presumably) I didn't expect working here?

Around 19.5 Meg throughput is what you get from 23.4 Meg sync.
