Can Fibre installation at exchange affect individual lines?

[link to this post]

Looking at my graph

you can see that I'm suffering from a lot of dropped packets from around 9pm - 8am onwards each day. Internet access seems to grind to a halt for brief periods and I get page unavailable a lot during this before recovering.

They started installing fibre cabs around town a few weeks ago and my line was fine until then. Could something they are doing in the exchange cause this? I have tried turning off router for a few mins and re-connecting but this has done nothing.

Should make no difference, unless fiddling in your PSTN cabinet and an engineer knocks the line, which is possible everytime they do some line work in a cabinet.

There was an engineer working in my cab (scp) at the beginning of last week so that could well explain it then. I just check back on the graphs and it started Monday 8th so I reckon that's it.

There is probably nothing I can do about it is there? I doubt PlusNet would be interested as it's not really causing me much hassle (just the wife who is up through the night breast-feeding and browses the net to stay sane!!!).

Little strange though as it only seems to affect the line at night!

Back in the days of dial-up, I had few problems during the day, using dial-up to access remote computers at other company sites.

The lines involved tended to have a fairly consistent level of noise, during the day.

However, when working overtime, occasionally to midnight, to get "quiet time" without interruption from colleagues etc, the dial-up lines would normally seem quiet; but I encountered more frequent interruptions, presumed to be due to spikes standing out more clearly against the generally-quieter background noise.

Something like that may be happening to your line.

With the way that the PCPs are designed and wired, existing wiring and joints can be disturbed and effectively must be disturbed on any occasion that any work is carried out in them.

Yeah it could be. It's gotten even worse and is now happening constantly:

I've filled out a fault ticket with PlusNet so I'll see what they say.

Well this is really getting annoying now. In just 12hrs, my attenuation has gone from 31 to 42, my connection speed has gone from around 13meg to 6 meg and I'm getting disconnected every few mins!!! Not good at all.

My live graph is a hideous mass of red at the moment. If anyone from PlusNet is reading this, can you PLEASE take a look at ticket: 91648155 ??

Tickets can take days to be looked at, and each time you update one it goes to the back of the queue.
Perhaps the best approach is to update the ticket with salient detail, then phone Support about it.

When they were putting in the fibre cab. for my area in February/March this year, the SNRM went sky high and my synch speed dropped from nearly 20Mb to 5Mb !!!! After the work was finished the synch recovered but its never got back to where it was -I've "lost" about 1.5Mb of synch speed. ......and the FTTC service has still not gone live at this cab. (or any other on our exchange) nearly 7 months from the works being carried out.

I had a similar problem some years ago. It was due to a street light not working. As soon as the lights came on outside our internet started disconnecting and the problem disappeared in the morning when they went off.

Worth a look outside to check.

I did think about that but ruled it out as our street lights actually turn off at 11.45pm until 6am so that the Council can save a few £s

There was a major outage at 6pm affecting a huge number of customers, I am still unable to reconnect. Big thread about it in the Community forum.

warning I have tried the tactic of placing high detail in a ticket, and the phoning to jump the ticket queue, both times I did this the operator opened a new ticked and deleted the original.

I didn't see anything from Linn that suggested that!

Edit: In fact the only thing relevant was where it was pointed out that on FTTC it is the router and not the modem that had to be powered down for an hour - i.e. FTTC definitely affected. Had you misinterpreted that posting?

What she actually said was
If you are struggling to connect to the Internet then please try powering off your router, this does not apply to Fibre modems, for a minimum of 1-2 hours before powering it back up and attempting to re-establish a connection to the Internet.
In other words don't power of the fibre modem as it is the router connected to ther modem you need to power off as it is a PPP failure not a sync failure

Just quick update on this. Openreach Engineer just spent an hour at my house and decided that the fault is in the exchange somewhere so he off to fiddle about down there.

Here is the state of the line today! He thinks the outage from 4pm yesterday wasn't to do with PlusNet's.

I think my profile might be stuck as my modem is connected at 13391kbps and my speed in the PlusNet portal shows as 11.9 but my speedtest results are only reaching around 7meg suggesting the profile hasn't been updated and it's been 5 days since the line was fixed.

I've posted in the PlusNet community forum too but any chance a PlusNet rep could take a look for me please?

I'd actually expect 11.8 "Current line speed" in the Plusnet portal, and 11.81 in the Further Diagnostics of a BT WHolesale Performance Test.

Whatever, as the Plusnet one is driven by the BTW one, and is correct'ish, it doesn't sound like a profile problem. Have you checked the BT original?

Hi Roberto

You are correct - it is 11.8 in PlusNet current line speed. I will do a BT check at lunchtime and post the results here.

Any idea what the problem could be if it's not a stuck profile? Only my wife was there when the BT guy visited the house and all she told me is that the engineer, after spending about 20 mins in house said it was a problem at the exchange and she didn't see him again. He also changed the master socket to a filtered type while he was there.

BT test results confirm what I said:

Download speed achieved during the test was - 6.78 Mbps
For your connection, the acceptable range of speeds is 4 Mbps-21 Mbps.
IP Profile for your line is - 11.81 Mbps

What could be causing the line to be capped?
