Sync speed nosedived

[link to this post]

Hi all, it looks like my modem re-synced just under 8 hours ago. Sync is now 52101/20000 down from ~77xxx/20000 a couple of weeks ago.

I don't think that it is G.INP as I have a HG612 (unlocked) and firmware is B030SP08. Anyone else seen this?

As it's unlocked, how about posting the xdslcmd info --show output?

I'll post that this evening when I get home from work. I have a --show from before the drop so I'll post that too as a comparison. The BT speedtest tells me nothing is wrong even though my speed is now below the estimate.

I suppose OR think it is perfectly ok to lose one third of my speed in one go.

most likely cause at this point is crosstalk from a new subscriber in your area. But as roberto said paste the stats.

Is a one time loss of 25Mbps likely? There has been a gradual reduction of my attainable rate from around 102Mbps down to 77Mbps. I think that 25Mbps in one re sync is a bit too much.

I wonder if your cabinet has GINP and your modem doesn't have the right firmware?

There's your answer. There's been a dramatic deterioration in the propagation characteristics of your line. You have a line fault in other words; whether a fault in your internal wiring, or more likely on BT's external plant. Quite often, it's a failing, high-resistance joint at the distribution point, where the twisted pair is most vulnerable to the weather and corrosion.

The aggregate attenuation of all your downstream subcarriers has increased by 7.2dB from 13.7dB to 20.9dB. If we take the anti-log of 7.2dB, we can quantify the power loss in more intuitive terms..

7.2dB = 10.log10y = 100.72 = 5.25 ; and where 5.25-1 = 0.19

This tells us that the line fault has reduced your signal power to just 19% of what it was. With that signal degradation, it's perhaps surprising that your sync speed isn't much worse.

Yes you are right, I've not thought about it too hard as I have recently had a medical problem diagnosed and that has taken priority. (Still have to have an MRI scan though).

I have reported it as a fault to Plusnet via the member centre.

Sorry to hear about your "medical problem". Between these four wall's is it a gentleman's problem? If so, my sympathy's. My jelly bean (as the wife call's it) got caught in the crimp's while doing a dropwire re-fix. It turned a violent purple, swelling to five time's its (flacid) size. Tell me to mind my own, but what colour and size is your jelly bean?

Glad to hear your booked in for an MIR/CAT scan though. Could be a long wait for that scan while the Tory's are clinging to power. That's why we're voting Labour. Only Labour will get the N.H.S. back on it's feet. Labour, the only party fit for government. The only party that can deliver fibre to every home. Accept no less!

Really? How do you jump from TheHorseman's post to "a gentlemen's problem". I believe you just wildly over shared and we really didn't need to know that in a broadband forum. Maybe the Park would be a better place for that discussion (or possibly not).

No, the local doctor thought I might be in the early stages of Parkinson's, however a neurologist has said that it is not and it turns out that I have "essential tremor". There is still no cure but it can be treated by various drugs.

Wow, according to NHS Choices, 4% of adults over 40 suffer from this and I hadn't even heard of it (and I'm well over 40).

Yes, I've seen that myself, I also read the page on Parkinson's disease, since that was what the doctor thought I may have.It started to affect me early last year when I was 55. So I will soon have another tablet to add to the collection. At this rate I'll rattle when I walk grin.
