I saw it in their member centre and while moving the mouse, I clicked on it. I did nto want to click on it as i am not interested in it, not having a Tv licence and all that.
They should have made it so you have to click on it once and then get another page making sure you wanted to clicked.
so i expect sooner or later I will get some info about this in my email box.
I wonder if it will offer the same packages as BT, for their so called tiny prices

My friend did the same and she got a ticket from Sales. She dosen't want it either but now she can click it again so they reset it. Is it not BT TV in another wrapper?

Surely both are just YouView in wrappers?
|
|
|
Yes, Apparently Youview...
Personally it being on Youview is a bit rubbish... But then maybe Youview has come along way since the first Humax boxes that BT used to supply...
I had all sorts of issues with it and in the end when cancelling BT contract early they wanted £299 for it after I had paid £57 upfront for it and also paid monthly for a near useless service.
I've register interest anyway... Twice too for some odd reason!

I had BT Vision for a year. It was pretty good. Recording was good, planner was good, IP TV was fine for the additional channels.
Only left it because of a decent offer from Sky and the fact I was also using NowTV to get some of the sky channels that weren't available on BT Vision.
|
|
|
When did you get it may I ask?

That was direct from BT.

Oops, sorry. December 2013 moved back to Sky around October 2014.

No worries...
Oh OK, I had it December 2012 through to May 2013... when I moved a couple of mile up the road and ended up telling BT their was no way I was being held to contract when expected speeds where going to go from 10mbps to 2mbps...
It was pretty terrible all the way through... with a firmware update nearly weekly to try fix issues... I didn't have the live streaming service, only the on demand until i reverted back to freeview.
Did you have a Humax box or a BT branded one?
|
|
|
|
I had the BT Vision branded Humax box. I didn't get it until they had fixed a number of the issues and had released recording of the IP channels.
I probably didn't have any more issues with it than I do on a Sky box. It was pretty stable, series linked pretty flawlessly (as far as I remember) and didn't need regular reboots. Obviously don't know what the firmware is like now but it definitely was a reasonable quality box.
Plus, it was cheap compared to Sky. Trouble is I watch a relatively small number of regular shows but quite a few of them are Sky only (or Now TV) and I just got fed up with it - I prefer to record and watch at leisure - I watch little live TV and don't rely on streaming as I would forget to watch.
|
|
|
Oh OK fair enough.
Well I noticed they hae now released newer smaller boxes but I don't even watch Live T anymore so wouldn't be something I would be too interested in...
I did have Now TV but due to some issue with the app on games console and also the Now TV box's WiFi not being 5Ghz capable I cancelled it.
I think the Sky boxes are probably the best on the market to be honest... TiVo was cool for about a week and then it just slowed down and became a bit annoying.

As far as i know I have not got anything from sales. sop maybe the click did not work, suits me.

Im sure it will be a fantastic service, especially as their network is really stable.
NOT!
|
|
|
It won't traverse the Plusnet network. The BT television platform used for these YouView services delivers the content directly from the VDSL2 cabinet to the subscriber, using IGMP managed multicast outside the PPP connection to the ISP.
The technical specifications are available in the Openreach FTTC NTE compatibility documents, which detail the technical requirements for a compatible router that can provide IGMP proxy services using the same logical interface it uses to establish PPPoE.
I used the Openreach specifications to build a custom configuration on the Fritz!Box that makes it compatible. I shared the details with AVM but they've not implemented them in the standard configuration, making the Fritz a poor choice for anyone wanting YouView online television.

There's a 'hidden bonus' for users on Plunset's 40/20 FTTC 'Fibre Unlimited' who sync above 40Mb/s, the multicast can make use of the extra (sync) bandwidth available so you can still get your full 40Mb/s while streaming internet channels.
|
|
|
|
About time it caught up with Cable. You can download full speed and stream 1080P without any loss.

I used the Openreach specifications to build a custom configuration on the Fritz!Box that makes it compatible.
I did the same for OpenWrt. I've no YouView box to test with but i've been able to watch the test channel using VLC and others have reported that it works.

um, so I now got a email from Plusnet saying
Hello,
Thank you for pre-registering your interest in our TV product. We are nearly ready to launch, which we are very excited about.
When we are ready to go, you have indicated that you would like us to contact you. We'll give you a call specifically about our TV service regardless of your other marketing preferences.
Kind Regards,
The Plusnet TV Team
Which means my click did work, so how do I get out of this pre-register l;ot as I am certainly not interested.
Alsoi, anyone from plusnet on here, can plusnet make it so that it is not so easy to click on the pre-register link, or if they do ask them if they are sure they want to pre-register.
i do not even have a a TV licence, so Plusnet TV would be a waste of time for me.

Hope this doesn't mean even more capacity issues at peak times,?
And i ain't interested in having freeview channels that i have already which mostly broadcast repeats or repeats or something that i wouldn't waste my life or part of watching plenty of those channels on freeview I see no gain

No, the TV uses the BT Fibre Multicast platform. This means it gets delivered from your local cabinet, not over the link to the ISP. The only contention will be the TV taking a chunk of your line speed while viewing/recording the online channels.
The exception is Netflix and catch-up services, these will use your Plusnet broadband service just the same as viewing them on a computer or smart TV.

I would actually be quite tempted, as I am beginning to thing that the free stuff that is available is getting very poor. Unfortunately, we use a computer with a TV card in it as our television and I don't think this will connect to the box.
|
|
|
Why does it need an aerial if it is taking its feed from the internet?
|
|
|
|
The YouView box uses the aerial as it also has a Freeview receiver in it.
There are two types of boxes, one that can record (PVR/DVR??), one that can't.
So you could use the box to record internet and/or Freeview channels.
You also get an enhanced set of functions on top of the regular Freeview channel information. For example, the BBC Red Button / Text Service has the option of taking it's data from over the air or via your network connection.
The guide information for Freeview can also pull down information via the network enhancing that side too.
You also have the option of a Freeview App for various phones that if you have the PVR/DVR device, you can remotely set your device to record any programs whether they be Freeview or Network originated.
Another use will be more apparent during Wimbledon. Assume a match is being shown on BBC2 via Freeview but has to end for some reason, Freeview will allow you to jump to the BBC Sports App which will be streaming nearly every match online. i.e. you can seamlessley change changes without having to change 'sources' on your TV. I know, not exactly difficult to switch between TV & HDMIx via your TV remote. But the 'one box' solutions means you can use the YouView remote to access Freeview, Internet Channels, Enhanced Text/Guide and various Apps/Players.
|
|
|
Thanks .
I don't think I'll be signing up.

Plug the aerial into the YouView box and plug the Youview box into your PC monitor (most monitors have HDMI these days). I think the YouView box has audio out ports for speakers too.

You can pick up a Youview box from ebay and use it as a Freeview DVR with the bonus of having all the terrestrial catch-up services. I picked up a Huawei DN370-T 3 years ago for £30, the HDD packed in a few months ago so I replaced that and it's working fine. Can be a little slow, but a dual tuner Freeview HD PVR for that price is a steal.
The much better DTR-T2100 are also available on ebay for ~£90.

Unfortunately, neither the monitor, nor the projector we use with the computer have HDMI inputs and would be very expensive to change.
I do have a converter lead HDMI to VGA, which I bought to connect my raspberry Pi to a normal monitor. I could use that I suppose, but without lots of lead switching that would right off the current system. However if things break down, I will consider it for the next evolution.

The boxes also usually offer composite video and SCART, if that's of any use.

My original question was as to why it needed an aerial. Not because I was particularly interested in getting one.
The detailed explanation, as well as answering that, didn't suggest anything I might want it for. Plus I already have a 2-channel Freeview DVR, a Freeview TV, and Chromecast.
Quite happy with that. All I'm missing is legit Sky F1 at a sensible price. NowTV from Sky is a non-starter in that respect. The pirates are just about acceptable.

I hope the box they supply is decent, because some of the ones I have seen is so slow, it would annoy me.
I did think about it for about two mins, but to use it I would need a Tv licence
, like £5 a month extra on top of my broadband is not bad for a few extra channels. The only problem with these channels is that like a lot of channels on Sky they have far too many repeats, also can Plusnet cope with them, because the way their service have been for the last week I do not think it could.
Saying that Netflix was far better lastnight.,

I j had a phonecall from Plusnet earlier, I do not normally answer that phone, but I was just going past it when it rang.
Anyway, they offered me Plusnet TV for nothing. When ,my payment goes to full, I would get TV for free, I know it is only a fiver, but still. But i would still need to pay the £50 activation fee. That is a lot of money just to do a few clicks on a computer to get it activated.
I kindly refused. I know why they phoned because i clicked on the advert in the member centre by accident and it put me as interested, even if I did put a note in their ticket system to say it was a mistake and I was not interested, they still phoned.
Anyone else had a call from them?

Just had a quick look at their site and it seems the box is the Humax DTR-T2100, which is the newest Youview box and is the one that gets the best reviews.
Would be nice if it was possible to load custom firmware like the older Humax FOX models.

That is a good deal.
If i had a TV licence I may have gone for it this early in my contract, but I do not really want to bother with a Tv licence since i watched very little when I had one.
So if i went for Plusnet TV it would cost me over £200 by the time I add the activation fee on top of the TV licence.

My box arrived yesterday, and after a bit of 'faffing' getting my Billion router set up I am 'on line'.
So far the 'extra' internet fed channels are mainly dross, but I live in hope of expansion. At least I now have the 'catch-up', a PVR and HD for not a lot.
|
|
|

I'm very happy with the box, much quicker than the old one and definitely worth it for the deal. The extra channels didn't really interest me. If you have another Humax box in the same room you will have to change the remote code for that box.

Called up and got £5 per month for TV (YouView+ box) and £9.99 per month Unlimited Fibre Extra for 24 months. I was a few months out of contract for the fibre. £7.99 P&P charge for YouView box + new router. No charge or activation for hardware.

Ah, cool, that sounds like a decent deal. Thanks for putting me right.
Is it a good box?
I'm guessing there's little chance of being able to add the pay BT Sport channels to the Plusnet Youview service in the future, as I guess BT will want to keep that for its 'premium' own brand offering, i.e. BT Broadband / BT Infinity.

It strikes me as odd that Plusnet sells access to BT Sport to its customers via Sky, but do not offer it through their own platform.

It is a good box, and a great deal IMO. It's locked down when you compare it to something like the HDR-FOX T2, no custom firmware etc. But it's extremely quick when you compare it to the Huawei DN370T that I was using before.
It will take a very long time to boot if it's in Eco-mode, but you can turn this off. The main selling point, I think, is the integration of all the catchup services, scroll back in the EPG and select a programme and it will automatically load in the respective catchup player. The remote recording app for Android and IOS is handy, not quite as good as the Sky+ app as you can only manage recordings that you have set from the app. It also has Netflix.

My offer was £5 a month for 24 months on 40/20 fibre
So decided not to bother
|
|
|
My offer was £5 a month for 24 months on 40/20 fibre
I have had 80/20 fibre for a while and pay £20/month for it (plus line rental and phone)..
I asked about £1/week and was told I could have £4 discount on the broadband and the +box would be free.
So £24 for 24 months with a free +box seems pretty reasonable, however, what kind of retention deal could I get if I threatened to leave?
Anyone else get a 80/20 retention deal?
|
|
|
|
I gave up after waiting 10 minutes on the phone.
Not sure what the offer is, as Plusnet emailed me today. The mail implies that the box is free and that the basic channels are too.
I'm on 80/20 fibre at £10 a month for 2 years (retention deal back in March) so I guess it's unlikely they'll just give me a box and service for free.
We'll see when I give 'em a call tomorrow..
|

People who got the £1 offer should check their bills, I was charged twice for Youview for some reason. I phoned them and should be sorted but worth making sure you're not losing £5/month.
