Fibre order taking 20 days ???

Our exchange only cabinet has been flagged today as having fibre.

I ordered straight away (with Plusnet) and got a date of 07-Oct-2015 (20 days)!

Why would it take so long?

Also why is an engineer visit required for a self install?

Plusnet don't do self install but in any case the engineer needs to go to the cab/exchange and change the wiring

Plusnet do not do self-installs. (The last time I checked was only a few days ago, so if it's changed I apologise).

I expect the 20 days is because a whole load of other people got in before you when the new cabinet went live.

You don't want a self-install in case you have poor wiring at home. Having an engineer visit means you will get the best speeds possible from your home and the wiring in the street to the cabinet.

I was in a similar situtation about 6 wks ago.

My cabinet went live at the end of July. I ordered with Plusnet on the 31st July, the only early date available was 14th August, so I took that. Other dates were at least one week later.

14th August came no engineer or router. So spoke to Plusnet only to be told 3rd Sept.
Disappointed, but okay I suppose.

About a week later, I got a call from BT whom, I had been with about 21 months for Phone and Broadband. End result Plusnet cancelled, and switched to BT on 4th Sept, self install.

It was almost as if nothing happened for 14 days on my plusnet order.

I hope you get an install on the 7th Oct.

I would have really appreciated an engineer install, as I'm 875m from cabinet(500m underground armoured cable+ 175m aerial through an ash tree+ 200m in ducting to PCP.

Which was one of the reasons I chose Plusnet first. Would have prefered an Openreach modem too. But over a month to activation was a bit much.

I wrote a program to check the BT wholesale ADSL/fibre web site daily at 09:00, so I doubt that I was beaten too it.
The Plusnet site offered me a choice of using my own equipment or a self install of their "free" modem costing a few quid to deliver. I opted for the free modem to allow for any support calls to not fall off the flow chart (if you know what I mean).

Are you sure you aren't talking about the Plusnet free router? That doesn't have a modem. The modem comes with the engineer.

Yes that is what I ordered and I will be happy to have the separate OR modem as this will give me more choices later on...

My only gripe is the long time delay.

So it is an engineer install .

However, there are two kinds of those as well. A standard one, where the cabinet work is obvious done, the master socket is sorted out if necessary and the VDSL2+ filter plate fitted, the line tested and the modem connected and tested.

The "managed" one is where the engineer also installs and tests the router.

Plusnet do the standard.

I assume you are aware that unless you have ordered the data extension kit the modem will only work from the master socket and needs to be close to it. It will not work from any extensions.
