Whats your router/connection uptime?

[link to this post]

The TG582n router from Plusnet has been solid as a rock recently, I would usually get at least one random restart / disconnect every 1 or 2 weeks. Not sure if there has been a recent firmware upgrade, but I was impressed with the up time!

I haven't checked mine recently but earlier this year:

Sadly shortly after that it got bounced by the numpties installing a second cabinet. I have an HG612 modem and Billion 6300 router.

BT Homehub 5 or 6?

I really hate BT Homehub, don't like BT control the hub like rebooting etc.

When my machine boots the internet connection occurs well in advance of the Windows startup sequence completing. Presumably the System up time starts at the end of the sequence.

Why does a reboot matter so long as the speed doesn't reduce as a result?

My Homehub 5a does this but the speed has been gently climbing with every reboot and has gone from 34 to 42 Mbps over a period of 3 months or so

So why do BT have this feature? Do they know that the firmware code loses memory?

The Post Office supplied Zyxel AMG1302-T10B router I am using at the moment has a feature to set an automatic reboot after a number of seconds if you want, but it is optional.

No idea why, all I can assume is bad firmware known to cause issues if kept online for too long. I personally find it ridiculous the biggest UK ISP has this "feature."

They also push out firmware upgrades at silly hours e.g. my last one at 8:45PM and it took 25 minutes to come back online - I genuinely thought the router was broken.

It's probably not a bug, but more a feature of when the different parts of the startup sequence are completed. From experience most router/modems appear to complete the line sync process fairly early on after powering up. If connection time is recorded from when line sync is achieved, then that might explain it as there are often several other stages that the router has to complete before being fully up, like initialiseing DHCP and other server functions, NTP calls or whatever else is encoded in the start sequence.

I'd also add it depends when connection means. It it's just sync, then that's one thing, but it it's all the other stuff, like authentication onto the network, getting an external IP address and so on.

A look through the event logs after a full startup might give a clue.

Hah. my connection bounced Monday morning. I dun got me another 1Mb/s of download laugh

Kinda weird for a line that's been live for coming up on four years but this is the second bump I've had this year. I've gone from around 62Mb/s to around 69Mb/s.

71 days 16 hours 4 minutes 15 seconds

Huawie modem
Netgear WNR 2000 router.

I had a sudden increase in speed of about 10Mbps (to 65Mbps) some time before this which vanished after a power cut (54Mbps). I managed to persuade Plusnet that there was a problem and the engineer came out and did some sort of reset, which dropped my connection to 45Mbps. He said this often happened and it would recover with time. It is now back to about 55Mbps, which is where I started.

I have a new Plusnet modem router, which I am reluctant to use as the Huawie has been patched/hacked, silly really as I rarely take advantage of the hack to see what is going on.

In truth the 54/16 that I do get is I think fast enough for everything I do, I just feel along with many that as I am paying for 80/20 that is what I should get. When I first switched to FTTC, it was because of very poor broadband speeds and I remember the first engineer saying his device was syncing at 79Mbps. I am pretty sure that I was either the first of second person on the cabinet to go live, as I was watching it like a hawk. The percentage of the 80Mbps that I do achieve is roughly the same or a bit better than the percentage of the achievable rate under ADSL.

No link between "The percentage of the 80Mbps that I do achieve is roughly the same or a bit better than the percentage of the achievable rate under ADSL"

Its a common myth, the reality is down to the distance to the VDSL2 cabinet for VDSL2 and to the exchange for ADSL/ASDL2+

The differences after a DLM reset will be down to things like G.INP being on/off and other variables that the DLM adjusts over time, plus over time the noise environment due to crosstalk will vary too.

Morning. I was - but I seem to have been opted back in again when I tried to use it on my BT Mobile.

It did go down earlier so yeah maybe it's all to do with the horrible FON :/

Cheers. I assume that's what was stopping it - I will have to opt out again. BT are sneaky in the sense of if I opt out they don't let me use it on my mobile either - but they do sell wifi with the sim deals they offer.

Thanks to 2 brief power cuts this morning. However based on my previous post and Excel my up time must have been about 139 days before the power cuts.
