Exactly the same symptoms starting at 8am today as well. Currently using a BT OR ECI modem and Draytek 2920
FTTC was synching at 60/20 and had been rock steady (no drops in many weeks)

I may try turning the Modem off for 5 minutes and then a reboot to see if I can get another Gateway (which normally as you say tends to resolve things)
