BB Speed Test 'Provider' Incorrect

[link to this post]

Recent Broadband Speed Tests I have initiated are showing an incorrect service Provider by default - EE Mobile (Orange/T-mobile) instead of the correct Plusnet. Any suggested explanation, please?

Plusnet are reselling EE mobile broadband, and EE owns the now defunct Orange and T-mobile brand names.

Are you testing a landline or a mobile connection?

It all comes to the same thing anyway, just meaning the IP Address you had at the time was first registered to one of those three and hasnt been changed at the reference source.

My broadband basic info/help site - www.robertos.me.uk. Domains, site and mail hosting - Tsohost.
Connection - Three 4G, tbb tests normally 35-45Mpbs down, 65Mbps off-peak, 9-24 up.

1. Which speed test are you using?

2. Could you post the first three parts of your IP address please (e.g. 80.229.7.*)

Assuming the thinkbroadband speed test follows the RIPE ownership.

Thanks for the explanation, RobertoS. I was testing a landline.

Should that be Plusnet who would arrange a change of the reference source?

Despite changing IP address, I still see the same 'old' Provider information, so presumably Plusnet have blocks of IP addresses that have not been changed.

You can look up your IP address at RIPE the Regional IP registry for Europe here:
https://www.ripe.net/

A range of IP addresses is called a "netblock" and given the fact that IP addresses have now run out, organisations move netblocks around. Organisations may not update RIPE very often!

Plusnet is one of many companies owned by BT plc, so they can move IP address blocks between the providers, for fixed line they have BT Broadband, EE broadband and Plusnet broadband. For mobile, BT own EE mobile which in the past consisted of Orange and T-mobile.

Not all speed test sites update their information from RIPE at the same time.

Summary - don't worry about it, it does not affect your connection at all. It is an admin overhead.

2. 31.125.97

RIPE shows the name of the block holding that IP as "EE Limited" but shows the management is PLUSNET:

My Bold shows Plusnet, and if you go to RIPE web page you can click those and it says "Plus Net Ripe Admin" and "Plusnet Hostmaster".

Unless one gets assigned a Plusnet IP address from the ranges registered with ARIN.

At least RIPE will tell you it an ARIN range.

Huh, I was sure they used to. Perhaps they should post "Time to give up, go IPv6".

PN is so late doing anything about IPv6 its scary.

Yep. I was wondering if Plusnet being subsumed into BT Consumer might help the IPv6 situation along a bit, but it seems not.

Basically that was what I was getting at. That Plusnet may not have updated RIPE or may be using an older copy of it. Or tbb using a none-updated site. But that it isn't an "incorrect" (as per the Subject) attribution.

You have moved on though to more up to date info that is far more useful than my previous post.

It does seem likely PN have just thrown the whole lot into their allocation pool.

My broadband basic info/help site - www.robertos.me.uk. Domains, site and mail hosting - Tsohost.
Connection - Three 4G, tbb tests normally 35-45Mpbs down, 65Mbps off-peak, 9-24 up.

If you swap the letters BT for the PN above Id agree.

Should be updated now, the block was an EE Mobile block but looks to have moved a big chunk to Plusnet

Thanks Andrew, now updated and showing Plusnet. Could you just persuade PN to increase bandwith to get my download back up to speed, please!
