Severe speed drops in the evening

[link to this post]

Howdy Y'All

I'm experiencing some severe speed drops in the evening. My line sync remains constant (no disconnected 100+ hrs uptime reported 64564 Kbps 15946 Kbps) but the browsing speed and speed tests drop by half during the evening with lots of lag on online gaming on these hours too. Running speeds tests in the morning when im experiencing "normal service" I usually get about 55 mbs, however in the evening this drops to around 20mbs if I'm lucky some speed tests reporting 6mbs. This is on multiple speed testers including the wholesale one recommended in plusnets help section

https://www.thinkbroadband.com/speedtest/15936337786...

I've logged a fault with plusnet but I wondered if I am alone in this or have plusnet implemented some heavy-handed throttling in the evenings?

ISP's don't throttle customers like they used to.
Plusnet don't throttle at all.

It will be congestion.

Agree it's probably local congestion. Your best chance of getting this sorted is to post on their user forums. There used to be a member of staff on there with a username of Gandalf, who was very good at sorting this kind of thing out. In the past he's arranged for customers with a similar issue to be moved onto a less congested SVLAN, when they initially got nowhere withe the tech support helpline.

Have you tried disconnecting and reconnecting to see if it gets you onto another gateway? I can't say I've had any problems in the evening.

are you using a wired ethernet connection, or wireless.
note I have seen machines that appear to be connected by wire, but actually using their internal wifi

Plusnet don't sell and haven't even trialled G.Fast.

It's either a wild test (single thread suggests it's FTTC 80/20) or it could be an old FTTP line.

During the very early FTTP trial Plusnet sold above 80Mb.
Those who took those packages are still on then.

Defo a wired connection the machine I'm using is one I built it has no wifi cards in it , no other devices plugged in and wifi was turned off at the router so that no other devices could use the bandwidth during the tests and skew the results

Not G.fast, but you have something that is over doing the buffering and messing uo the speed test results.

By the way it is impolite to hijack another users thread - that is your warning.

I have not hijack other user, it just my wifi mess up this speedtest. If I use ethernet direct the speed test show 74/19 if using wireless your speedtest are incorrect reading at higher speed. You can't blame me MrSaffron for these wireless does affect your incorrect speed.

Why post it on this thread though?

I assumed you were linking to a speed test by the OP or someone in this thread because.... well how is it relevant to this thread?

Precisely why I gave the warning for someone who has been here long enough to know the etiquette

So plus net have run sync speed tests and found no fault at 9:30am, i did clearly state that the sync speed always remains constant and there are no drops that its a throughput issue and that it only occurs after 8pm at night reliably. The ran a second speed test at 10:45am and found no sync speed issues (as i would expect) they have said the SVLAN is fine

At this stage they have booked an engineer to come out 1-6pm on Monday but again i have flagged to them that the fault only occurs after 9pm and asked them to include this detail on the fault report to openrach So likely i am about to pay a £65 fee because they cant run tests at the time the problem occurs. I am using BT Wholesales test platform and have emailed them over 15 reports on different days showing the issue.

So far i have plugged into the diagnostic/master socket, unplugged all devices from the router bar one (wifi turned off so nothing can connect), swapped ethernet cables, tried multple computers in different ethernet ports

Personally I would reject the engineer visit as likelihood is you will get charged when clearly there is nothing wrong with your line. As others have said it is either local congestion or congestion in the PlusNet network. It needs someone that doesn't just follow the script at PlusNet to pick this up and review the case.

Could be similar to the issue I (and others from multiple ISPs) had earlier this year.

See
https://forums.thinkbroadband.com/plusnet/f/4636449-...
https://community.plus.net/t5/Fibre-Broadband/Peak-t...
https://community.plus.net/t5/Fibre-Broadband/Moved-...

Eventually this was resolved after OpenReach enabled additional capacity between the cab and exchange although it took an escalation to the Openreach CEO to get it resolved.

Post your issue on the Plusnet forums the support is much better than phone support.
