Why is the 500mbps FTTP tariff always giving me 300mbps?

[link to this post]

I was on FTTP 74 meg download and when doing speed checks with ethernet I was only getting about 50mbps any time of the day. Swapping the supplied plusnet router with a Unifi Dream Machine router made no difference.

I upgraded to the 500mbps tariff and now only ever get a download speed of 300mbps on a good day normally about 290. I don't understand where the slowdown is happening.
Why are plusnet selling a tariff at 500mbps when and it's only 290mbps?

At work, we have fibre to the premises using M247, and that's always the maximum tariff speed, day or night.

I have spoken with Plusnet they checked the line and told me all was ok and that slow downs can happen. Unless the download speed regularly drops below about 245 they won't do anything. I could understand this slow down happening if I was on fibre to the cabinet due to crosstalk and the distance from the cabinet etc, but I'm on fibre to the premises.

Surely this some kind of advertising rule that's being broken. If anyone has any technical insights as to why my fibre to the premises connection is not the full advertised speed, please could they let me know.
Thanks.

Ethernet cable into the Plusnet router, also tried using a Unifi Dream Machine Router. Always the same slow speeds.

Does the UDR have the inbuilt speed test capability the same as the UDM-Pro & SE? It is a test that is direct to the ONT with no cables/WiFi or anything.

On a UDM I would go to: https://xxx.xx.xx.xx/network/default/dashboard and there is a small pice of info on the left showing the last test and a <Test Now>. If there is what does it say?

And if the capability is there, set it for say 03:48 every morning.

Hi, on The Unifi Dream Machine I have the speed test set for every day at 7am and it's aways 288mbps. If I use the supplied plusnet router it's the the same speed.

Does FTTP suffer with slow down like FTTC, or am I missing something here?

FTTP might suffer occasional slowdown if really busy but realisticsally it should not.

If it is reporting the same every day then it poijnts to you being provisioned on a 300Mbps service.

Move the test to the middle of the night and away from the HH:00/15/30/45 time and get the UDM to record it for a week. Then you need to persude PN that there is a problem - you have the proof.

My 500/70 speed - UDM-Pro to ONT is 505/72 every day with just a small variation.

Thanks, I'll try that too.

But thinking about it...I was on FF74, then I upgraded to FF300. But while that upgrade was going through, I called back the next day and asked to be upgraded further to FF500.

All seemed to go well and now everything says I'm on FF500, but I think I'm stuck on FF300 as the actual download and upload speeds match the 300FF tariff.

And if you have the UI WiFi Man app on your phone. Run a speedtest from that and grab screen shots.

It will show: UDM to ONT speeds and UDM to phone speeds separately. That will help demonstrate the issue.

My 500/70 service shows (with other users online too)

BT>>>UDM Dn 477.6 Up 72.8 - As expected
UDM>>>phone Dn 245.9 Up300.9

It effectively demonstrates the FTTP speed and the separation from the local WiFi speed

It's fixed!!!!

I also posted is issue on the PlusNet forums, and luckily a staff member saw the post. He had a look at the issue and told me to reboot everything and "try it now".

I got my 510mbps now, I'm interested to know what the issue was. Thanks for all the help on here guys. I was starting to think I was going mad.
Plusnet support line would not listen and kept saying it's within specs and I need to live with it, my last resort was to try forums. Shame it came to that.

Sound like Current Line Profile was at the wrong profile for 500Meg product on PN side. Gandalf did the magic fix for you. Hat off to him.

You should be due a refund of the difference in price between 330 and 500 for the number of months.
