How to get your user/password from your sky box.

[link to this post]

ok, so i was connected today and my router arrived today aswell. Now the first thing that went through my mind was "how to use my own router" . so i set out how to get what i needed. i have stated below the simplest way to achieve this:

okay, once router and everything is connected, open up your web browser and enter this:

http://192.168.0.1/setup.cgi?todo=ping_test&c4_IPAddr=%26%2Fbin%2Fbusybox%20grep%20ppoa_%20%2Ftmp%2Fnvram%20>%20%2Fwww%2Fnetgear.cfg

if you have to replace the ip address then do so. Then enter this into the address bar:

http://192.168.0.1/netgear.cfg

it should bring up a save file prompt. Save it somewhere. Then open it with notepad or something and hey presto there is your login info. Each new subject field is seperated by pppoa.

so you shopuld end up with:

pppoa_username: (yourMACaddressOFrouter)@skydsl
pppoa_password: 1234567aa1
pppoa_idle=0
pppoa_ipaddr=

all credits to jcardoso for supplying it, i just really really really simplified it for us less computer literate peeps.

i do have one question, is it ok to download standard netgear firmware now? at the moment i am using my old [censored] Belkin router, but it is a LOT more stable than the netgear running on [censored] Sky firware. What netgear firmware would you peeps suggest? Latest?

any suggestions welcome, i've already downloaded the latest firmware.

Same problem here, it keeps loosing sync, i'm gonna try updating firmware now and see if that helps.

I updated the firmware on day 1 of connection due to disconnections. And YES it helped a fair bit but ultimatly these netgear routers are at the bottom of the pile. Take a look at novembers issue of PC Pro who did a test and the netgear came in near the bottom. I knew this before going to sky as a mate has the same router and has to keep rebooting the thing.

I had the same problem with disconnections since I got onto Sky on the 13th (at least one every day, and always - for some funny reason - ended up being at around 8PM); until the last 2 or 3 days ago, when my connection seemed to stable out. No reboots/reconnects until this morning...

My router is in my bedroom and it irritated me when all I could see throughout the night was the internet light flash now and then - Checked the log and found a whole list od DOS attacks; so was forced to disconnect and reconnect for a new IP addres - That solved the DOS attack issue, but now my connection (especially this last hour) has been very unstable!!!

Seemed to have a good sync now - lets hope it stays that way; will try a different router if this keeps happening!

Thanks for this thread;
