Any way to turn the firewall off?

[link to this post]

I'm sick of having to port forward every damn thing, what an absolute pain.

I'll just use windows.

MSN messenger has decided it's not going to log me in ever again, utorrent gives me a green tick but the port test gives me an error and emule reports everything is fine but still gives me a lowid in the main servers.

Obviously using the DG8345467546465T or whatever they have given me,

Cheers.

Set the DMZ to the internal IP address of your main computer. Any undefined incoming connections will go it...

The IP address of the computer keeps changing and it messes everything up. I've tried to get a static ip but it only works with some programmes, for example, emule.

Any way to just turn the damn thing off? Thanks

Are you talking about the WAN side of your router or the IP address of your computer behind it. All you need to have is a static address on the computer itself - that will make no difference to any software on your box (not quite true but I doubt you are running anything I know of which is tied to the IP address)

The WAN side is given to you when your router connects to your ISP. Your internal machine can be configured to some static address, probably 192.168.0.xxx (depends on the default range your router uses)

You then set the DMZ to point to 192.168.0.xxx

The NAT firewall on the DG834GT cannot be turned off, it is a NAT router.

Setting a static IP on the computers network card and making this IP the DMZ is a way to go, but will mean relying on your computer firewall.

Is the problem not knowing how to set a static IP address on the computer, in which case what operating system are you using? To switch the PC to a static IP requires NO changes in the router

As Andrew said, you can't turn it off. If you go to the routers web page, click LAN IP Setup, then click Add under the Address Reservation section. Select the radio button corresponding to your computer and then click Add. The router will now give you that same address every time (even after a power cycle). This is better than assigning yourself a static address at the PC because you are still using DHCP, so if you ever use another router or a different network, it will still pick up the relevant settings.

I'm confused, one is telling me no changes to the router are needed, the other is saying otherwise.

Can someone please give me step by step instructions on how to turn the firewall off please? Many thanks.

You certainly are confused

Everyone is actually telling you the same thing but you just cannot see it. You have also been told you cannot turn the firewall off. So what step by step instructions to tuen the firewall off do you think you are going to get ?

I suspect the OP has moved from a USB connection to a routed connection, and has software that needs inbound.

This was precisely the reason UPNP was invented, and for BitTorrent Azurus supports UPNP, there may be others (such as GetRight).
