joining sky

I would like to ask the very many learned members on this site about any pitfalls I may encounter by moving to Sky. At the moment I am with Virgin Media (cable) and I have checked that I can get Sky BB on a LLU exchange and that I can expect about 5 mb/s download. Most people who have changed seem to have had minimum problems. Any advice would be helpfull.

It would be worth posting your exchange. The research I had done suggests that some exchanges are overloaded and having problems with slow down on evenings and high pings.

There is a post on Skys own forum by an unhappy customer listed a load of exchanges which are having problems.

I can't comment as we haven't switched over yet.

I had been with UKONLINE since they started over 6 years ago. I even got two subscriptions (two postcode). UKONLINE is easynet which have been by Sky.

Ukonline was shut by sky and customers were offered a nice incentive to swith to Sky.

Here is the thing:

Post code one:
UKONLINE (On 16Mo contract) speed: 8Mo Download / 756ko Upload
I've switched to BE Unlimited on this contract due to poor sky customer support (did not know abt Ukonline offer and mac code)
New Speed: (on 24Mo contract) speed: 12Mo Download / 1598ko Upload


Post code two:
UKONLINE: (on 16Mo contract) speed: 3.5Mo Download / 756ko Upload
I've switched to Sky (mainly for the price as I had a TV package there, although while ordering I could see they had no clue about broadband) The estimate when ordering: 3Mo.
It seems ok and no risk as (again) Ukonline = Easynet = Sky.
Here is the data since switching to SKY:
New package (20Mo unlimited) speed: 1.5Mo Download / 800Ko Upload

You cannot use your own modem with Sky.

So, my advice stay away !

Try to speak about noise margin, attenuation, or using your own router when calling Sky.

I am on 20Mo package and I get 1.5, while other ISP could get me twice

Sky is fine and great value for a lot of people. You can use any router you like as long as you don't mind forcing the details out of the Sky supplied router.

The only router issue is that Sky only offer support for their supplied routers, so plug it back in before you call support.

changed from virgin(bb,tv,phone) to sky for the same services. Can honestly say no majo problems so far ping times are good and since they have upgraded the exchange no slow done during peak times at all.

Speed wise getting 7.5 meg down and 840 up compared to the 3 mb i was predicted im more than happy!
