Slow speed?

First let me apologise in advance, I am a novice to broadband and don't really understand the fine details.

I've had Sky broadband for a while, before Christmas when I ran the speed test I would get an average of 13, now I'm lucky to get 8. I've spoken to Sky who can't help me. I'm not really sure that I have a problem ,certainly my internet is slower than it used to be.

I have this from my router;

DownStream Connection Speed 18014
UpStream Connection Speed 1157

But this when I test here;

06/03/11 17:43 Sun 8177 Kbps 972 Kbps 90.198.160.203 Sky

My previous best was;

05/09/10 10:36 Sun 14334 Kbps 973 Kbps 94.2.94.224 Sky

Please forgive me if I missed obvious details, can anyone give me some beginners advice?

your most recent test was done in the evening on Sunday night, this would likely be the reason for a slower download speed. Have you tried testing at 10am like your last test?

Where in the country are you?
I am in Hertfordshire and am suffering similar problems.
Sky deny there is any network problem but my Samknows/Ofcom measuring equipment says otherwise.
I would be pleased to hear of others suffering the same: Intermittent speed, DNS response times etc..........

I've tested the speed at all times of the day and night, and on different days. I don't get that much difference.

I'm in Welwyn Garden City, just down the road from you. Sky have got problems at the moment. Yours and my exchange are affected....see Roberts post in this link....mine is the post by ...Tony++WGC.

I always get a poor speed test on here for some reason when speeds are fine on an actual download any idea why

It seems to be something to do with routing but nobody has got to the bottom of it yet as far as I know.

im in Northern ireland to, mine was fine up until xmas and the bad weather but since then it has really went downhill
Before xmas i was getting -



Then after xmas it went down as low as -



It has settled down a bit but is still a lot slower than it use to be -



if i reboot the router it will connect pritty good-

But after a few hours it drops back down again-

Noise Margin 13.4 db 7.5 db

noise margin downstream jumps up,though the upstream has stayed pritty constant, still waiting on sky replying to see if theres anything they can do.
