can i order sky bb with out a phoneline..

Hi,

is it possible to order (online) sky phone including line rental and broadband with out a phone line in the property? If so what happens will sky arrange for the line to be installed or whatever needs doing?

You can place the order yes but if there's no physical phone line to your house then the order will get stuck and you'll have to phone them regarding a £100 installation charge.

Ok well i just been to the house in question, there is a physical line, but it will need turning back on and a number assigned to it. So would i be right in thinking sky would sort this for me as part of my order, would I still incur the £100 charge?

Did you know you can get a new phone line from Sky?

When you select Broadband & Talk you'll be asked to enter your phone number. If you don't have a compatible line, you can get a new one from Sky. The usual cost for this is £39 but until 30 June you can get a new line for £10 when you take Sky Talk Line Rental.

As Resonance says you should be able to do it online for a £10 charge.

ok thanks, now heres hoping that its good service and i get good speeds* well at least most of the time anyway

*wonder what speeds I will get,no way of checking at the moment. Hopefully its safe bet it would be over 1mb right? (what i get now). As I'm moving from a village in to a town and on to a different exchange.

Nothing is safe.

Check on SamKnows using the post code.

Just input the post code and not the line, then you'll get told the exchange, click on the Locality tab and SamKnows will guess at the line length. Mine says 820m but mine is actually closer to 1000m. (metres).

true. I know that more factors then distance from the exchange can affect speeds.
But I figured compared to my parents house which samknows the following "You are approximately 3.63km from the exchange. Note that this is the straight line distance" I figured in a town the exchange is going to be closer to where i will be living which is about a minute or 2 walking distance from the town centre. Hence if i still only get 1mb I would be very surpised.

According to BT Wholesale, houses at your postcode should be able to support

up to 2Mbps via ADSL
7.5Mbps or greater ADSL connection via ADSL Max
17Mbps or greater via ADSL2+

You can receive 2Mbps ADSL
You can receive 1Mbps ADSL
You can receive 512kbps ADSL
You can receive 256kbps ADSL

You are approximately 389 metres from the exchange. Note that this is the straight line distance - the actual cable length will be longer!

No idea how long my actual line length. But I won't how close I will get to that guess of 17mb without the line becoming unreliable.
