Static IP and OpenDNS

Hi All,

Just about to move to Sky broadband from Plus.net.

Is it possible to:
1. Get a static IP address from Sky for the router
B. Change the DNS settings on the supplied router to point at the OpenDNS servers?

For DNS and router - yes - for static IP no.

The routers all support dyn dns services so there is a way round.

Although unfortunately Dyndns want your credit/debit card details these days before giving you a free account.

fair comment, although when you tot up the costs it can still work out cheaper overall. In my case, with sky being the only LLU provider and having a massive aversion to BT the service level bandwidth wise is the main deciding factor along with download limits. I used to be with ID net in order to maintain service quality at £35/month but restricted to 40 Gb monthly download which running servers and so-on from home was difficult to stay under. Sky have been very good for the 6 months I've been on. and in fact the 'sticky' IP address has only changed 3 times so manual changes on DNS would have been OK except for having to look everyday to check.

My IP has been very sticky, only changed a few times (4 maybe 5) in just under a year now..

Real bummer about dyndns, had my account with them for ages now so guess I'm a lucky one...

You can use "non sky routers" maybe that could be a path for you, my old netcomm hacked BT Voyager had a number of "dyn dns" providers and you could plug in your DNS servers of choice, I was with Be previously so that was a must
