hi, would i need to get a MAC code from O2 if i was going to change to Sky LLU?

The MAC won't be used by Sky as its a full LLU service they use, assuming they have LLU at your exchange.
Just make sure you don't pay an extra charges to O2 e.g. leaving/cancellation/migration fees.
In short recommend still getting the MAC, and waiting the 7 days then starting the Sky process.

OK, that's where i went wrong then, i moved to Sky LLU last August, i assumed O2 would take note of the MAC being used and cancel my account, but they said the MAC wasn't used so they didn't cancel my account, months later i realized and out of pocket above £200
in the process of trying to get my money back from O2, but not going well

Yikes. Personally I didn't request a MAC when moving to Sky, and my account cancelled automatically when I migrated without me having to contact O2.

I would think this can be resolved if you persevere, possibly via the Communication Ombudsman if you hit a brick wall with O2. After all, you can't have two broadband service on one line, and you have invoices showing that supposedly you did.

After all, you can't have two broadband service on one line, and you have invoices showing that supposedly you did. That doesn't necessarily prove anything. Most ISPs have a notice of termination period, often 30 days, that you are contracted to pay for even after migration has taken place.
EDIT: In this case the OP never even gave O2 the 7 days notice it required.

If you have a contract with someone, you can't just walk away and hope they stop charging you - you have to agree an end to the contract with them.

30 days, fair enough. But 9 months?

Except I didn't expressly cancel my O2 account. I ordered Sky Broadband and O2 automatically cancelled. It appears the OP is being treated differently to me for some reason.
