Moving to Fibre - some advice on wiring/speeds

Hi All.

As an ex O2 BB customer, I decided to move to Sky Fibre for the extra speed. My questions are around what I can do to make sure that I obtain the maximum speeds once installed.

I need some ground up advice I'm afraid :/

My house (and wiring) is 1930's, I've only ever got 10mb on the O2 20mb package. So I'm looking for some advice on ground up checks where I am responsible, wiring, sockets etc.

Sorry for the 'how do I walk' type post, but it seems better to state I am a novice up front.

What are your full router stats now on ADSL? By assessing whether you are getting good adsl speeds or not will help to show how good your internal wiring is.

Stats below. The lady from Sky quoted me as having an 'available' download of 12mb, but I've never had more than 10mb maximum since installation many years ago.

If its a self-install which is likely now with Sky then you are best sourcing a VDSL faceplate

It fits easily and should not need you to change any phone wiring. If you cannot locate the VDSL modem/router near to the master socket then people can explain the various options.

Sky will usually send out the Sky Hub which plugs in directly now, with a couple of microfilters, which is fine for some people, but if after the best speeds might be an issue, hence the other posters suggesting a peek at ADSL2+ stats which can give some indication of bad wiring.

You are getting 12 Meg; all ISPs quote sync speed, not throughput which they have no control over.

You are getting about right sync; perhaps slightly low. Have your tried your stats from hidden test socket?

You should do a Quiet Line Test, to find out the condition of your Phone Line - helping maximise your speed, whether ADSL or VDSL, reporting any untoward noises as a PHONE Fault to your Phone Service Provider, avoiding any mention of Broadband.

Stats below are from the master socket, reason being, I tried to change the Faceplate with a new one, only got as far as unscrewing it, reconnected thinking better to leave it with a bit more information, and my BB stopped working, so now I'm straight into the master socket /doh

I was talking about the hidden test socket behind the faceplate of the master socket, not the 'phone' socket on the front of the master socket itself; see: http://www.kitz.co.uk/adsl/socket.htm . This usually eliminates all your internal wiring from the equation.

That's where I'm currently connected, and stats above are from that connection.
