sky changing IP in a few minutes?

sky are screwing around with my broadband. e.g

10:47:53 Looks like your ISP changed your ip from 2.219.43.205 to 2.127.14.***).
10:53:54 Looks like your ISP changed your ip from 2.127.14.209 to 2.222.113.***).

wth?

The fact that it is taking a few minutes suggests either the router has crashed and is rebooting or the ADSL line has failed and it is resyncing.

Since Sky is a dynamic IP address service then no guarantee that you will get given the same IP address everytime this happens. Very often people get the same IP address after a line drop, but this is not always the case.

With my Sky line, I don't think I have ever got the same IP after a line drop.

the reason i think it's sky and not the router freaking out is time. if i max out my download on a sat/sun then it's happens far more often. it can happen after work on a weekday but not always. if i'm up early hours then it doesn't happen much at all. the load on the router is the same so why does it happen more often during the weekend/peak hours.

if i upload mainly and limit my download to not have it kill my upload then it hardly happens at all.

But if your line is on an edge regarding noise or a dodgy connection, loading it will make drop-outs more likely.

Try Routerstats to see your noise levels at dropout.

Standard DHCP yes, but if your ADSL link resyncs then you may be reconnected via a different gateway and hence connect to a different DHCP server.

i'll check out that link.

as far as the line goes though, i might be wrong but if i restart my router (i do when my IP changes) then sky would detect that as a drop right? and doing it 3-4 times in an hour should resetup my line to a higher Db?

Only if their DLM works the same way as BTwholesale. I've no idea!

And some routers have also been known to crash from load (particularly with torrents) if you use lots of connections at once, and torrents do this to get the best speeds.
