Sky HD Download Size

Hey guys,

Been googling around but not found anybody anywhere mention this, so I will ask here.

I have Sky HD TV, within the Sky HD Box you can download movies etc. When I hover over a movie it will show download size of approximately 9gb. Now I have fibre optic broadband syncing at the full speed.

When I go to download the movie, showing at 9gb, as soon as I hit download the size drops to around 3gb and it says within seconds it is ready to view.

Why am I not getting the full 9gb download and why does the Sky box automatically reduce the quality to the 3gb version. I have the bandwidth.

Sky box connects over 5Ghz WiFi and on my laptop using 5Ghz WiFi I have full reception and get full speed (41Mbps on a speedtest and 9.6Mbps upload) in the same area as the Sky box.

It's already downloading in HD, just the quality of the HD download isn't as good as it could be.

E.g. a movie of 1.5 hours is 3Gb, but the download size as you browse the on demand section shows up to 9Gb.

Unless the 9Gb is a 4K size or something, and Sky are not providing this just yet. I mean 3Gb for 1.5 hours is still a good quality... It just baffles me that it shows as 9Gb and then drops down to a 3GB version for no reason.

It's not 4K. It's been like that for quite some time, and I assume (correctly or otherwise) it's a glitch.

The system allows you to start to view the movie before it has downloaded completely. The download continues until the whole 9 yards is on your harddrive
What makes you think the quality as watched is not as good as it was?
Have you tried downloading in standard definition and then comparing the quality of the two downloads?

When I go to select a movie, it says download size: 9gb
When I hit download, the download size drops to 3gb.
It decides, on its own, to download the movie at 3gb size, not 9gb. I lose 6gb of potential quality.
It does this on absolutely everything.

Why is it not downloading the full 9gb file? Why does it automatically drop to 3gb? I have the bandwidth to support the 9gb file without any issues.

Is the 9gb size a lie?

I understand fully how it works in terms of downloading the whole thing in the background.

Which movie is it?

I've never come across one that size most are in the 3-5 GB range.

Most of them, will take a picture when I get chance.

I think it's just a glitch with the original file size that it displays.

Have done when I rang regarding my bill a few months back, they had no idea. The lady said I was getting the 9gb file at a discounted rate to save my network so I could do other things at the same time...
