Now TV Broadband Speed

Hi there,

I don't post often but this is something I don't quiet understand.

So here is my situation, I have Now TV FTTC up to 38Mbps. One PC connected via Ethernet and a few devices connected by WiFi.

I have a new NTE5C with a MK 4 SSFP. Just one Cordless Phone plugged in.

I was (just today) upgraded to the new Hub 2 router, but even before then I have had the same issue.

I think my broadband is slower than it should be.

I managed to find this from the Stats:

Broadband Link Downstream Upstream
Connection Speed 32400 kbps 8496 kbps
Line Attenuation 12.5 dB 0.0 dB
Noise Margin 25.4 dB 25.25 dB

I have also checked for any noise on the line using a known working corded phone, with and without the Router connected. No issues or noise detected.

Any advice?

Your speed tests look fine for the sync - it is the sync that is low as you should be able to get much higher than that and so should be syncing at the cap for the 40/10 service. I would guess that your line is being capped for some reason but you would need to try and get NowTV to find out why.

What "should" the margin be? Ideally?

Not a simple question...

You are on a capped 40/10 product - so sync speeds should be at around that level and at that point the margin wants to be as high as possible. If you moved to an 80/20 product then it would sync close to or at that speed (probably) and the noise margin would be much lower to reflect that.

On longer lines the margin would traditionally be around 6dB (and speeds would be whatever can be achieved) but good lines the margin may drop as low as 3dB to eek out more speed.

So, if you are at the fastest speed your product can do the the best position is a high margin. If you are below the maximum for your product then you want to use up some of that margin to gain better speeds.

Just wanted to provide a quick update. Had time this even to ring Now TV and after a 5 ish min wait, and a line check at their end (with me in the test socket) there is a fault...

Got an OR engineer out tomorrow 8am-1pm (AM slot) - Pays to call and have done the checks before.

UPDATE:

OR Visited today, engineer was fantastic and the line is back to 40/10 Mbps.
