SR213 router

[link to this post]

Hi

I am on Full Fibre 500 but only get 140 - 170 Mbps on WIFI, i cannot connect via Ethernet due to the layout of my room and the router being in the living room. I telephoned Sky and they wanted an extra £8 a month for Wifi Max and the SR213 router. I currently have a SR203. Do you think the newer router would improve my speed? Thanks

I know you have problems with room layout, but have you tried the following
  1. temporarily connecting via ethernet moving the computer to the router
  2. connecting by wireless, again moving the computer to the router

just to make sure that the speeds you expect are actually coming down the fibre?

The SR213 does not seem to have a good reputation on-line and I have seen comment that one person regrets the change - not that I have any direct experience. Frankly at £8/month I would just buy my own router, but then your wifi speeds look fine for most normal uses.

Obstacles and walls never help, but always hinder with WiFi. If you want the closest speeds to theoretical - then you need to be in the same room as the access point / WiFi-enabled router.

It's just physics I'm afraid. Your WiFi speeds don't look particularly terrible though, as said.

@astra2010,

We need more details. How many floors / wall / etc are there between the router and where you are connecting. What device are using to connect to the internet? The device itself might be connecting via 2.4GHz rather than 5GHz (which is the faster connection). You might need to separate the bands on the router so that you can choose to connect to the 5GHz connection only. I've done that on my VM Hub 4 so that I can limit the devices that use the 2.4GHz band. They are the devices that can ONLY connect via 2.4GHz due the limitations of the wireless transmitter in the devices.
