2 issues. 1. Slow speed 2. Can't use own router

[link to this post]

Good evening all

I'm trying to get the bottom of an issue whereby I'm on the 900/900 package but only getting<200mbps down and <80up! This was working fine when I got the service (up to limits of wifi AC) but has got really bad.

Having raised a ticket with Zen, they've sent me a loan Fritzbox to ensure it's not the equipment at fault. However, I can not connect to Zen with the loan router with PPPoE LAN ID of 0, 101, 911. Zen is saying the LAN ID is 911 but the working original router is working on 0 and not on 911.
As a second attempt, I've backed up the original working router settings and restored them on the loan Fritzbox and it still won't connect. I've tried a new ASUS RT-AX86U, with PPPoE with Tech support confirming all the settings, no joy.

Has anyone got any ideas. I'm guessing the two issues are linked!

Hi

If your existing own router is working and it's just a vase of the speed dropping I'd be inclinded to note down the settings (don't use the backup configuration option) and then factory reset it and reset everything manaully in case it's simply a case of something going wrong with the running copy of the firmware.

I know it's a PITA to put the settings in again but have solved some downright bizarre situations with my routers (on a variety of ISPs) over the years by doing there after technical support have not been able to find a cause.

If that doesn't fix it but you get the connection back at the same reduced speed, go back to the loan Fritzbox and factory reset it (the default password should be on the bottom label)

You need to expand System then Backup and you'll find the factory reset tab there.

Virgin (ADSL) => Namesco => Newnet => O2 => Plusnet => Zen => Newnet => Zen => Freeola => Vivaciti (using O2 Wholesale DSL) => Xilo (C&W Wholesale) => Xilo (O2 Wholesale) => Xilo (TT Wholesale due to O2 Wholesale closure) => Zen LLU =>> ZeN FTTP (Openreach 300 Mbps down, 47 Mbps up)
Router: Fritzbox 7530

Note: I don't lay turf for anyone. astro or otherwise, all views and opinions expressed are my own based on experience.

This is getting interesting ! I am with Zen on the 500Mb download package, it has worked fine for a year, but all of a sudden (I noticed on 20th March) I suddenly got very slow and erratic connectivity and downloads were around 15Mb max, but Fast.com would occasionally indicate 120Mb downloads. Uploads were fine though.

I contacted Zen, and they tried loads, but the upshot was a PPPOE connection direct from my Mac gave 500/60 Mb - but anything on LAN side of the router gave max 120/60Mb.

Zen sent loan Fritz!Box, exactly the same problem.

Zen sent loan Technicolor router, exactly the same problem.

I tried an ancient Apple time capsule that I have, which can do PPPOE router work. Getting consistent 200Mb down and 60Mb up. This is a known limitation with 4th Gen Time capsule, will never give above about 200 Mbits.

Conclusion? There IS a real problem here, with routers? But it's Bizarre, interesting that your problem coincides with mine timing-wise, and is similar in nature??? Something is amiss, but what?
