Zyxel Router ?

[link to this post]

Anyone got one of the 660 jobbies ? Whats it like, how does it perform on your line ? Can you post some stats, any special features, whats it like for disconnections on a Max line ?

TIA

They are seriously rubbish in my experience. My A & A supplied one is sat on the shelf with a Belkin 7633 taking it's place

That's interesting. I did the exact opposite. Replaced my Belkin 7633, which was rubbish, with the AAISP 660.

I have the 660HW. I don't do anything exciting with my connection, single IP, no port forwarding etc. and it's been a great bit of kit.

The only niggle is that it doesn't always seem to re-establish a connection if the line drops, e.g something strange happened with our power today and I came home to find the Zyxel had rebooted and had been up for 9 hours, but hadn't established a connection.

cheers,
Paul

The line concerned is long 60-62 attenuation depending on sync rate. The Zyxel acheived roughly 2500 sync rate at 6 SNR, but insisted on re-syncing when the SNR improved up to about 30 times a day.

I've got 7633's on other lines with similar attenuation and find them incredibly stable.
There's also the bonus of the SNR margin tweak which allows me to reach the 2500 BRAS data rate.

The 660s also have SNR margin tweaks, although I'll admit to not having tried it as I've got a fixed 1mbps connection (with Eclipse).

Something like:-

> wan adsl rateadap on
> wan adsl noisemargin x

There's also a

> wan adsl noisegt x

which I think allows for fine tuning.

Personally I've found the 660 very reliable with up to 3000 hours continuous ADSL connections using browsing, email, ftp, sipgate, skype, etc. /However/, when I was testing p2p for linux isos I found the 660 would periodically crash/reboot if a lot of parallel sessions were being quickly created and torn down. I've seen other people report similar problems. I've never had problems with sessions being recreated after dropping (although again this is with Eclipse and not A&A).

I have two lines, each with a 660, bonded at my end with ipcop firewall. Both lines have a attenuation of about 49db with a 4500/5000 BRAS rate. I find the 660 automatic re-sync up useful. The 7633 just seemed to keep re-syncing lower and lower. I also found the 7633 config options limiting.

The P660R's I've got have some problems, like randomly rebooting...

New firmware seems to have sorted it so far, but it remains to be seen how stable they actually are.
