Using AAISP with a Linksys WRT54GS

[link to this post]

I am currently on a 4Mb ntl cable connection, but will be moving house. I would have stayed with ntl but the new address is not cabled up, so my only option is ADSL.

I am considering AA because of the lack of interference with the connection (no proxies, blocked ports) and the tech support (knowledgable people in this country on a geog phone number).

I already have a WRT54GS which I currently use with the cable modem and have noticed that some people are connected via the free Zyxel 660R and a Linksys WRT54GS. Was this simple to set up? Is there any pitfalls I should watch out for?

If I recall correctly, the WRT54GS is the router version of the WAP54G.
If that's the case, you should have no problems using the Zyxel with this router.

You can either run NAT as you (probably) do now, or request a block of public IP's to use.
If you use the WRT as a DHCP server for your addresses and have a block of IP's then you may get a little trouble in that the DHCP server may only give out private addresses - without checking the manual I'm not sure. That's the only issue I can see.

Anyone else think of another?

theres no issue with setting the dhcp range to the public ips given by AnA
infact i ran with a wrt for a long while
im now using a small (tiny! nano-itx) linux box for the second stage routing

Nice. I've had a few devices that will not assign addresses unless they are 10.x.x.x, 172.x.x.x or 192.x.x.x

Thanks for the confirmation.

I take it that apart from all my devices having public ip addresses, everything else runs the same: i.e. the wrt54g router still acts as a firewall to port scans and only forwards network traffic if it has been allowed in the router.

Am I correct in thinking that I will need to use a third party firmware in the WRT54GS?

A google search seems to suggest that the Linksys WRT54G (with linksys firmware) does not support multiple public IP addresses.

I thought it did support multiple IPs with Linksys firmware, however I can't be sure, as the last few I used (including the newer WRT54GL), I flushed straight away with DD-WRT. You could do that if you like(provided you have a pre version 5 of WRT54GS).

Running a block of IPs woudn't be a problem with DD-WRT or with other variants of 3rd party WRT firmwares.

Yeah, it's a v1.1 so it has the Linux kernal. I've also got a shrink-wrapped pre-v5 wrt54g I could play around with.

Now that could be something worth it's weight in gold, if only it had the letter 'S' at the end.. I know a few people who will pay over the odds to get their hands on version 1-4 of WRT54GS.
