BRAS profile slowly dropping....

[link to this post]

Got A&A to activate broadband at my new house on Friday, on the STDorch (Dorchester exchange).

Started with nearly 6mb speeds, which is what was expected.

Line stats:

Connection Speed 8128 kbps 448 kbps
Line Attenuation 27.0 db 18.0 db
Noise Margin 7.7 db 28.0 db

Line dropped out a couple times in the afternoon and then, we had this horrendous storm over Friday night & Saturday morning. Line dropped out something like ten times. Then, Saturday night, the power kept fluctuating and knocking out my PC/router. So - I checked my stats at A&A and you can now see my profile has dropped from 7150 to 5000:

Yesterday 19:15:36 5696K adsl5000 5000K
13 Fri 18:41:08 6240K adsl5500 5500K
13 Fri 17:19:22 6816K adsl6000 6000K
13 Fri 16:59:15 6240K adsl5500 5500K
13 Fri 10:50:48 8128K adsl7150 7150K

My sync as of this morning is still 8128K however.

Did I read somewhere that if your line keeps dropping, BT will drop your BRAS profile? Presently, after doing a BT speedcheck, it definitely is now sat at 5000K.

I will be reporting this out to A&A tomorrow, but just wanted a bit of help understanding what is going on. I appreciate also that as the line has only just been activated, I'm probably in the ten day training period - or is that separate to the BRAS profile?

its the storm plus power fluctuations which probably caused the damage and your profile should recover in 3 days if you continue to hold synch.

Aha.

In reference to www.kitz.co.uk:
"~ What is "Adaptive Max Logic"?

* Decreases in sync speed will still reflect in the IP profile within 75 mins.
* Increases in sync speed will depend on the percentage of the increase and will vary between a few hours and up to 5 days.

A large % increase in sync speed should see the IP profile rise within 4-6 hours, whilst a small increase may take up to 5 days before the IP profile reflects the change. BT estimates that under "Adaptive Max Logic" more than 60% of increases will now occur before they would on the old 3 day system.

Examples:-

1. - Large increase - Line dropped to a 576 sync during a thunderstorm (profile = 500), after a resync it went back up to 7616 (profile 6500). Profile increase = 6000/500 *100 = 1200% increase which should occur in 4-6 hours.
2. - Small increase - Sync increase from 7616 (profile 6500) to 8128 (profile 7150) after interleaving removed. Profile increase = 650/6500*100 = 10% which may not take effect for 5 days.

How long it exactly takes for increases to be applied would also seem to depend on how busy the system is.

During the storm, I was disconnected several times and the sync was slower ergo, profile dropped to 5000. The sync is now back to 8128, but as that is small - it could take up to 5 days for the profile to return to normal.

Get in touch with AAISP and ask them to get BT to restart your training period from scratch, due to local lightning activity. Your line profile will recover, but the upset caused by the storm may cause the BT system to record a low Fault Threshold Rate, which will be a hinderance should you have line problems later on.

I'm in the same boat at the moment - I was into my second training period when my line profile dropped to 1500kbps from 5000kbps after a 13-hour power cut due to power lines brought down in Friday night's storm. AAISP are looking into it.

I note now that the sync rate is a bit unstable. I'm getting the odd drop out and the sync now goes anywhere between 8120 and 7400.

Well, you only had it on a couple of hours, and noise increases as darkness approaches, so you may not be able to maintain 8128 over the whole 24 hour period. You should still contact AAISP to get the training period restarted, though, if you haven't already.

As you are in a new house are you certain that your wiring is optimise, sockets etc plus have you run the quiet line test 17070 option 2 ?

On this one - my profile is now down to 4500 - but I removed the ring wire from the master socket - and have managed to now have a consistent sync at 8128 for the last 48 hours. A&A claim there's no point restarting the training period as the MSR and FTR have not yet been set. Although they point out if the MSR is low, they will start training again.

The line is beginnning to annoy me now.

Finally, my profile went back up to 7150k - so I did a speed test and started getting between 0.5 and 1.6mb.....worst speeds so far.

Restarted the router and guess what? Sync went down to 7***. Speeds stayed low, this was about Sunday 18:00.

Subsequently, profile jumped down again. Reported to A&A, who have now got the training period restarted as of today (Thurs).

I can definitely sync to 8128 in the mornings - but evenings, it's usually 7*** - which means if my line drops out in the evening due to bad weather(which there has been alot of lately) - my sync drops and the so does the profile.

My speeds do seem to be all over the place though. Even last night, around 18:00, I was getting about 1mb down. An hour or so later, it's up to around 3-4mb. Downloading files from Rapidshare fluctuates between 100KB/s to 500KB/s all the time.....I hope we're not into a long slog with this line...... frown
