On 20CN via ERX1-READING2 and have had loss of PPP since about 17:30.
Anybody else having loss of service on 20CN right now?

Cheers - Only say's 21CN connections though? Could be connected I guess as Reading is obviously fairly close.

Yes, I have no idea why it was listed as closed either especially as it was ongoing until 03:50 this morning and some lines did not come back on until after 06:00.
Strange, all working again fine now though.

20CN connections over IP Stream Connect route over 21CN - I believe all AAISP 20CN users are on IPSC.

Any idea how big an area was affected - a BTW failure would surely be a big event.

I don't think you can put it down to a specific area as it's possible that some exchanges were only partially affected. BT have claimed only 9,000 users were affected which is obviously nonsense as Plusnet's users on-line graph shows around 25,000 of their users lost connection (they also have substantial numbers of users on IPSC).

Well said !! We've come to rely on the Internet as almost another utility, and yet the main infrastructure is left in the hands of a company that seemingly couldn't care less about ISPs and their customers.

Some of the LLU networks are similarly unreliable; Be*'s has been far more up/down for me in the past 6 months than C&W was in a year...
I'm supposed to rest assured that "it's being fixed guys, seriously, it's fine", but don't think the wobbly infrastructure is a BT only thing.

No. LLU is local loop unbundling so the original owner still owns it (in this case BT of some flavour) and allows other carriers to use it.

Exactly.
So we can't get away from BTW involvement in the Uk's Internet connections - unless you can afford satellite !! And when BTW fails then the whole system is put in jeopardy.
IMO there should be safeguards in place to re-route traffic when nodes on the network fail. But do BTW really care ?!!

Noticed how many routing issues people on Be* or O2 have reported lately? Can connect to some sites, not others?
I've noticed it far more on Be* than I ever did on C&W. The line and sync stays constant throughout so my local loop is innocent in all of that.

VM cable is another way to avoid any BT involvement in your network connection if you happen to be in an area they cover.

I *THINK* (emphasis on "think" and I sit ready to be corrected) that VM use their own ducting which is why, when OFCOM suggested that BT should open their ducting up to 3rd parties, BT wanted the same rules to be applied to VM.
As for the VM's network architecture, I think the copper cable connects to fibre in seperate cabs from the BT LLU ones and the fibre then routes back to their own bases where it connect to the wider internet.
If that is the case I don't think the data would ever enter the BT network at any point.
