TBB's ping tester does use a FireBrick product to do the ping - it's an ICMP ping - the same as when you use the 'ping' command on your computer.
The graphs that we produce are similar, and you can run both at the same time.
Our graphs use LCP echos, which is at the PPP level - so lower level than an ICMP ping. We also overlay up/down traffic on our graphs which is useful.
The red on your TBB graph means that your router (or the IP it's pinging) is not replying - the main cause of this is a firewall or setting on the router to block pings.
