Single Thread Speed?

[link to this post]

My ISP contract is about to end. I have a good VDSL 80/20 connection with them through BT backhaul. The only problem I have is a slow single thread speed which the ISP doesn’t seem to be able or want to sort out for me. My speeds are Upload 18mbps, Download Multithread 71mbps and Single thread just 37mbps on their speed test and only 27mbps on the Think Broadband test.

I am thinking of joining AAISP and hope that they can provide a much better single thread speed in the region of 70mbps. My exchange does offer both OR and Talk Talk LLU.

So. the question is how is the Single thread speeds you get with AAISP and which will they supply BT or TalkTalk backhaul?

Thank you for any thoughts.

Your profile suggests you are with Zen and Zen are having problems with single thread speeds, so a change to AA or any of the other premium ISPs is likely to give you a better result.

ISPs like AA and IDNet that have a choice of backhaul providers are likely to be in a better position to resolve your single thread speed issues as they have the option of moving you between backhaul providers without you having to change ISP.

My experience with IDNet is positive in that they have had me on TTB, then Zen and finally BTw for backhaul. It is only with BTw backhaul that I have had absolutely reliable single thread speeds.

I'm sure AA would do the same if you joined them and it proved to be a necessary move.

I am with AAISP, with their Home:1 2TB service with TalkTalk backhaul.

A single-threaded test download on a good FTTC connection
[[email protected] ~]$ fetch -o /dev/null http://ipv4.download.thinkbroadband.com/200MB.zip
/dev/null 200 MB 9040 kBps 23s

TBB test result at https://www.thinkbroadband.com/speedtest/15621688411...

I believe that TalkTalk is the AAISP default, but try talking to Sales.

I joined AAISP a while ago after slow single thread speeds on Zen
I was told on the forums that changing isp wouldn't increase my speeds ! total wrong they were I was getting 30 to 50 Mbps and netflix was buffering all the time

Since joining AAISP no problems at all ,73 Mbps any time of day or night

We don't have a default - we do use TalkTalk Business and BT Wholesale. Our aim is to use them both 50/50 - this gives us and our customers many advantages, eg for resilience (a customer can have a line on each), our support staff are able to compare the two if there are localised faults and so on. Both are very good, personally I have a line via TT at home, but it works just as well as when it was via BT. We're happy to use either - that's the main thing. smile

Good to know that. Looks like it will be AAISP at some point soon.

Same here. Had excellent single thread downloads on Zen so far. I think a lot depends on how you are routed. I've heard of people getting re-routed on Zen which has improved their single thread throughput.
