Re-use old router?

[link to this post]

I'm moving to A & A and have 2 old ADSL modem/routers. Both supplied by previous ISP. Current one is a fritzbox in bridged mode. I also have a technicolour one that is quite old that was in use before. Also set to bridge mode.

If I leave the fritzbox plugged in can I continue to use that with a new set of PPoE credentials put into my main Asus router when the ISP swap takes place?

I have just assumed I could and not ordered yet another modem/router from A & A.

If the fritzbox is from Zen you may struggle to set the settings in it and have them stick.

Changing the Fritzbox ISP from Zen in settings to “other” allows complete customisation of the router. Would recommend resetting the router to Factory settings first.

The Fritz!Box VoIP also works great with A&A’s SIP service. I’ve used it for years and it has never missed a beat. I paired my Siemens DECT phones directly to the Fritz!Box - they even work with the built-in contacts list (which syncs to iCloud, so it matches my iPhone), caller ID and the answerphone.

Does that work ok if the Fritzbox is in modem mode?

I'm having issues with a gigaset voip box at the moment so if I can use the fritzbox instead that would be really good.

If the Fritz!Box is acting as a modem then it means it's on the "outside" of your main router (carrying the PPPoE session) and therefore I would not expect it to be able to participate easily in anything from your LAN, including acting as a wifi access point or a SIP endpoint.

In theory, it's possible to run a second IP subnet on your WAN port in parallel with the PPPoE session. That's very fiddly to set up; I've done it with a sophisticated router (Mikrotik) but only so I could get management access to the modem (Vigor 130)

Definitely works ok. Didn't get chance to change anything on the fritzbox. Just put new account details in the Asus main router and it's been fine all day.
