just had virgin lay a new cable what do ya think of my graph

[link to this post]

http://www.thinkbroadband.com/ping/share/606596bc522...

theres the link to my current bb graph since i had virgins thickest cable installed for my 100meg con and quite a large number of virgin boxes as the standard cable couldnt cope

the graph shows some pretty high latency spikes and total packet loss at points but i was gaming at the time all through this and had no ill effects. playing on a german bf3 server with a ping of 40

do you think i should ring virgin and ask to get the line regraded as it is now able to actually handle the data as opposed to before.?

Looks fairly normal for a virgin connection, remember what others are doing in your area will have a big impact, particularly if you have lots of P2P uploaders in the area

what would the cause be for the 100% packet loss ive got some pretty heavy gaming priority settings on my pc but dunno if they would effect the router as it has the ability to controll routers that have some sort of local network controll support

The packet loss is most likely congestion causing packets to be delayed, and after a period of time these are then considered lost.

On the local network control support I don't follow you...are you talking about accessing the routers web interface?

Also any gaming priority settings would be negated by the lack of QoS control you have on the Virgin Media network

must admit my connection is starting to look like that (and 4 other locations i am monitoring, guess i should of not been recommending VM to every one as i may have made issues my self recommending it)

VM network does not seem to support any QOS on the nodes like BT does, as it lowers the speeds to get an constant service with no packet loss, VM they just seem to try an push max speed and not care about packet loss

its driving my next door person mad when trying to play games (3-20% packet loss)(guess i going to have to bug VM for an bit or use legal letters to get the my area upgraded) i never had issues with the dossic 1 network with 3 I had random problems for the last 3 years

that just stupidly stable

i can show you my 3 i am monitoring right now

mine

next door (my laptop X button and space bar is bugging me as its not always working)
http://www.thinkbroadband.com/ping/share/4d85ec428e2...

4 miles away
http://www.thinkbroadband.com/ping/share/a05e525bd1a...

4miles other direction (very messy this one his connection was Perfectly fine when it was on 20mb, he upgraded to 60mb superhub and the nice result is below) Note this link below may stop working if he gets his router replaced or change to BT Infinity as it get an new IP or it mite get fixed
http://www.thinkbroadband.com/ping/share/6e1eb30727e...

what do i need to say to Virgin apart from taking them to court to get it fixed (BT at the First 3 ping results is really an option as its less then 1MB but it at least the ping would be 100%)

i preferred it when i was on the Older DOCSIS 1 network (20mb cable) as i had 0 issues with packet loss, i had 50mb on the DOCSIS 3 network and i have had issues from time to time, but the last post i have done is the worst i have ever seen (then again first time i have monitored it constantly the BQM tool is usfull )

Yes, that's exactly what my VM graphs looked like...for many months. Luckily I had been with them for quite a few years prior, so getting out of the contract wasn't a problem.

UW is not really a provider to look for as a good gaming connection, there speciality is cheap broadband rather than high quality jitter free broadband for gamers

this is my first customer on UW that has taken ADSL (most of the others are energy only and mobile and smartbox's for virgin cable) be interesting what it be like ping wise, he going to get 20mb at the location he is at, as he pretty much lives next door to the exchange

as i just notices the rules about posting links can i put my UW link in the sig, as long as i do not promote it when helping others on here? (like what i have all ready been doing on here)
(going to just edit my sig now see if its ok or not)

No because your link promotes referrals, which is against the rules.

Most other peoples signatures are to links of useful material, rather than sales pitches

was going to say if you could edit that post as the time had passed when i could edit it

most of monitors in Latchford are showing loads of packet loss now (the ADSL sky one i am looking at is at 53 ping constantly min and avg, bit high but stable)

guess i am going to have to give virgin an ring on Tuesday(talk to India for an bit before i get some one in england)
3 connections in my street are performing about same quite badly with 20% packet loss 4pm-9pm ish and they just annoyed one of my customers by selling them 60mb cable (was 20mb cable) and now there Internet is very bad with about 20% packet loss again (the wood ping monitor)

not sure if calling them will do any thing right away as it looks like its overloaded node in my area (one where the fiber comes in before it gets to Coxa cable)

A Samknows white box gives a more useful picture IMHO and in combination with the TBB ping monitor gives all you need.

The TBB monitor shows packet loss and high pings when the line is driven hard - in my case when doing a daily backup at night but the Samknows Box shows that pings out and packets loss out are fine.

Simple piece of kit and free if they will take you on their EU survey!

Also gives regular speed tests that are generally in line with www.speedtest.net while the TBB speed test is always (for me) lower.

Also doesnt need a static IP!

Ex <n>ildram , been to SKY MAX - 15,225 Download

BE Unlimited - 21,000 Download 1,200 Upload,

Moved house, now BE Unlimited 6,500 Down, 1Mb/s up - gutted!

FTTC Cab just installation commenced 12th April - expect full 80 / 20 - bye bye BE, hello BT Infinity soon!

How about traditional command line pings?
Worth trying both www.thinkbroadband.com and another host that uses a different route out of Virgin Media.

We have frequently told them that the route they send traffic out on is congesting at peak times. Oddly the Sam Knows kit seems to be a better route, no idea why.

If the SamKnows is not showing similar results to a number of ping targets then suggests something more odd.

speedtest.net with its 10% and 20% reject and then pick best sample left, will always give a higher result, unless there is a flat speed profile. The idea is shown in http://www.farina1.com/vary2.jpg

i think our tv boxes and tivo boxes are affecting the quality as when using the net heavily the tv picture starts breaking up so the virgin engineer who visited wensday suggested a dedicated line for the broadband as its causing so many problems

the connections on my street seem to be ok last 2 days (still hitting peak packet loss but only 5% but for less then 5mins), must be nothing to download for the last 2-3 days (the 20mb to 60mb upgraded user there connection is still getting high packet loss)

looks very bad once the packet loss started, constant high ping would really show issue with constant uploading on your connection as its unlikely you would get 24hrs of high ping unless there was say broken fiber to your node in your area (online backup, p2p, or some one using your WiFi connection with p2p with out your permission) change the WiFi pass use wpa2 only

one or more computers in the house mite be uploading very fast (p2p app set to 0, so max upload limit it to 11-100KB/s or lower depending on the connection)

remove all pc's laptops phone form the router (make sure only one computer is connected to the router)

you can use http://f8luresig.mouselike.org as well as it show up to 500ms (but it does not send an ping every 1 second {more like 3-10 an minute} good to compare 2 different ping monitors), would like the owner to contact me but does not seem to look at emails or ICQ (he is online)

just checking as well Packet loss on the BQM what is the time out per ping ? as you only show up to 140ms on the BQM

make an account on the main page of TB and add your ip to the BQM does not take long, you can check it later on what your pings was like

Funny how the ones that don't have Virgin broadband want it and the ones that do switch to BT Infinty the moment it becomes available in their area.

You are talking about a RG11 coax... this will have little effect on your broadband performace. I have got 2 RG 6 cables and an RG11 feeding all the boxes and stuff in my house. It is all down to your distance from the cab. It is unusual for an ex-nynex build network to have many customers connected via RG11 compared with telewest built networks which have large numbers of customers fed by RG11. It was usual for every street to have 1 or 2 cabinets on a nynex network compared with 1 for every 2-3 streets on nynex.
