Red lines on BQM

[link to this post]

Hi there,

I'm trying to set up a monitor for my connection but the graph is constantly displaying red:

http://www.thinkbroadband.com/ping/share/9da32f23cc7...

I've got BT Infinity and using an Asus RT-N56U and have allowed the router to respond to ping requests in the firewall settings.

When running the test here:

http://www.thinkbroadband.com/tools/traceroute.html

Everything works OK and all of the requests complete.

Is there anything else that I need to change/check?

Thanks

I have the same setup, without any problems, what firmware are you using for the router?

Have you disable DoS Protection?

Can someone external to your connection actually ping you?

Traceroute on the web page can sometimes work even when you are not responding to pings

Yes DoS Protection is disabled and I'm using the latest firmware from the Asus site.

Not sure if somebody external can ping me... I've not tried.

Before checking that someone can ping you, make sure that WAN pings are enabled on the router, it's the most common cause of what you're seeing.

I'm not familiar with the RT-N56, but on the RT-N66 it's under the Firewall menu, General tab, Respond Ping Requests from WAN. Make sure the Yes radio button is selected- the default is No iirc.

I've allowed responses to ping requests in the router already.

The only other thing I can think of is that your IP has changed since you first set the BQM up- I think BT Infinity uses dynamic IP assignment, but I'm not sure.

Have you had a resync event since setting it up? That might cause it... try deleting that BQM and setting up a new one, it should automatically pick up your current IP (but will fail again if it changes, of course).

If that doesn't work then I'm stuck, Mr Saffron would need to look at details of your connection to the main site that I have no access to.

Thanks for your reply, BIll.

I left it on overnight and the IP was the same as it was when I set up the monitor and the monitor was still a red block of 100% PL.

That shouldn't matter, it's the router that responds to the pings, not the computer (unless you're using IPv6).

IP is not pinging, but does respond in a traceroute, but that seems not to be the end of the journey, as it tries to continue and gives host not responding but for the same IP address as previous hop.

Can you confirm it is Openreach FTTC modem to Asus router and the FTTC modem is not a hacked model, i.e. as supplied by openreach. It is possible this is a bug in the Asus PPPoE stack, as someone has reported low throughput on a high spec asus router as in it is handling data twice.

Interesting...

Yes, the modem isn't hacked/unlocked. It's as it was when Openreach installed (plugged it in!) it.

Sorry for bumping up again but is this something my end or your end? If it's my end is there anything I can do to resolve it as I can see people with the router elsewhere not having issues.

Edit:

It seems like I got some kind of response but then 100% PL when running it today. Strange. Any ideas?

It is something you end, alas while I have a RT-n66u I don't have a connection where I can make it public facing to test this properly, might be able to do some thing though

Thought so, just wondered if there was another way around it rather than having your IP pingable to the world

Not being pingable isn't a security feature. "hackers" don't just simply try ping to see if someone is there, in fact they laugh when people block pings as its not a security feature.

Stupid router software makers think it is :-/
