Help me diagnose why BQM is so weird

[link to this post]

Virgin Media, gigabit connection.

https://www.thinkbroadband.com/broadband/monitoring/...

I have been experience lag, and latency, and occasionally lots of packet loss, although not in the last 24 hours.

i also have a thread on the VM forums with more snapshots: https://community.virginmedia.com/t5/Networking-and-...

i'm in modem mode on the hub 4, connected to an asus router.

at first all my my graphs were blue, and then i realised it may be because my firewall was disabled on the asus router. i've since enabled it, and now my graphs look like they do in the above links.

Any help would be appreciated.

What Asus router is it e.g. is it up to the task of routing at 1gbit?
Have you done any other speed/bufferbloat tests? What speeds and latency do you see?

Virgin might just be demoting ICMP traffic but yours is not a unique experience on VM.

thanks for your reply.

it's an RT-AC86U, i've had it for a couple of years, and my BQM never looked like this.

speed test while wired get close to 900mb.

a wireless test on speedtest.com got 416.22 down, 97 up, and 12ms ping.

here is the live graph: https://www.thinkbroadband.com/broadband/monitoring/...

As said, that's not an atypical VM BQM graph.

You could be unfortunate to be on a relatively congested cable segment. Just par for the course with a DOCSIS cable-based network unfortunately.

The connection is strangely better during the peak time you would expect it to be worse if contested.

Maybe some form of power saving?
