Ping monitor showing weird results.

Hello all.

On Vodafone 900, all devices and speed and ping tests are reporting normal results but my ping monitor is all over the show.

Any ideas why this would be?

A few possible issues:

(1) Are you using IPv4 on the ping tests you're talking about?
(2) We monitor the connection every single second. If you get a single ping result from a speed test say, this is not going to show up when the performance varies.
(3) We use a much smaller ping packet (because we do so every second) which can be interpreted by routers in a different way. Some routers may cause issues with traffic TO them but not traffic THROUGH them (remember router isn't a very powerful box for its own purposes - it's main use is to pass traffic to you)

Also I see you're using IPv6 - are you monitoring your router's IP or possibly your computer's? If you're on wi-fi it wouldn't be unusal for it to not be responding overnight (as per your red on the graph) and to vary based on wi-fi peformance.

I've checked and your IPv6 address isn't available right now using standard ping and that matches your graph. I'm fairly suspicious it's the fact you're pinging your machine on wi-fi and not your broadband router.

I think it may have something to do with ipv4 and ipv6 as Vodafone has been messing around with them recently and its been causing issues with xbox live and xbox parties.

When you say its being pinged wirelessly (my router that is) i just set up the monitor as normal, went into settings to allow ping requests and only have the one router and no repeaters or mesh wifi

Okay, been out the house at the time of the graph going red, back in the house and its responding again.

Seems like its something on my network like you say is receiving the ping requests.

Will have to dig into the router settings and see if another device has been assigned for some reason.

I found I didn't get IPv6 on Vodafone 4G/5G but EE did when testing something today btw. Not sure about other connecitons.

I mean you're pinging your laptop, not your router.

With IPv4 you usually got one IPv4 address and use NAT to route everything on a private address (192.168.x.x, 10.x.x.x.x or similar). These days with CG-NAT you may actually be sharing that single IPv4 address with more than one customer.

With IPv6 every device is likely to have a routed IP, so the IP we see and suggest to you is the one from the device you're accessing the Internet from. This could also be the case if you used dynamic DNS if it's on your computer.. What you need is the IP address of *your router*.. this will probably end in something like ::1 (or maybe something with [censored] but not like 2130 or something like that)

Check what the 'gateway' is on your computer for IPv6.. if that address is similar to your computer (and not starting fe80) especially if it ends on ::1 then put that into the BQM tool.

Both my laptops are powered off so im wondering if its my TV, tablet or even my sky box.

I will probably power off one appliance at a time and see which one makes the bar go red and take it from there.

This isn't an unusual issue with BQM - Because we show you the IP we see people add that and it's not the router's IP
I'm reasonably confident this is the issue.

I can see an IP on the traceroute from us to you but I'm not sure that's the right one - that one ends in a random last bit, not 1. but that's consistent whilst your IP is very variable

You can see the Best vs Wrost variation is massive on the last hop. This strongly supports this theory.

Look for gateway/default gateway..

You may have created it on your phone and you visited the site - it would be the IP we show you (or on thinkbroadband.com/ip)

Thats the weird thing, i was at home and always have my phone in flight mode connected to the wifi 🤔

Got another monitor set up with my routers Ip address so should show it as normal now.
