Moving to BT good or bad...

[link to this post]

Well I am looking to move to BT total broadband option 4 with the VOIP phone etc. I am currently with nildram on their broadband 2 package.

Do you all think this will be a good move or a bad one. How is gaming, torrents and general surfing? I know they have a lot of pointless hops around the country for no reason that I can think of lol!

EDIT: Also how is the support? Has it moved to India or has that not happened yet.

any advice welcome just tell me what your experiences of BT have been and especially their support

Nobody had any experience they want to comment about. I know that the guy in India doesn't know what FTP is nor does he know that you have webspace that you can upload files to. My example was photos and he went on about the bt yahoo browser and uploading them via that, but who in their right mind would install that!

never had any problems of any significance in over 2 and a half years.

support is mostly in india these days but even thats a lot better than it used to be. i've spoken to a few and they all have fairly understandable accents. an added advantage is they actually answer quickly. i've rang 3 times for issues surrounding a line problem and they always answered within 1 minute. (compare to plusnet who i had for 9 months when i was away at university who were totally useless) it is scripted but so is everything in a call centre these days.

when i needed an engineer to look at a line fault they were quick to arrange and even rang back on the day to check the bloke had been and ask if everything had been resolved.

i play a lot of gaming (its what i do most on my PC heh) and its great. i agree there are a lot of pointless hops (i get 15 just going to my servers in london) but the pings are fine. mine average around 30ms to london based servers (i'm in northern ireland)

i find a good torrent with plenty of seeds runs close to max speed (im only on 1mbit) day or night. there are no restrictions as far as i can tell but i only use bit torrent the odd time.

general surfing is as you'd expect. never have any difficulties.

i would recommend BT if you believe you won't go over the 50GB guide with option 4. for most people i suspect its more than enough. the service is solid in my experience.

might be exchange issues rather than a BT problem then. hard to tell as limited info is available.

I get no probs.

BT tracert's are just more detailed than most other isp's, my pings are always best in my Multiplay server.

The connection is bullet proof. By far the most reliable provider i have used.

Since I have been with BT, I've seen the current darling isp of the AG boards change about 3 times. BT remains constant.

People do complain of the India support, but they also complained when it was in the UK. When things go wrong, people complain!

I can't think of another company CEO that personally replies to customer emails, often from his Blackberry. for a company the size of BT, that is remarkable and shows that the top dog is committed to good customer service.

I think the Option 3 pack with 40 gig and the sexy hub and phone, free off peak calls, free 250 minutes of Openzone WIFI roaming is a good deal and worth considering.

Let us know where you end up.

"I can't think of another company CEO that personally replies to customer emails, often from his Blackberry"

That it was I've got last week, answer straight from his Blackberry within minutes of mail sent to him. And better than that, matter I was asking him to look at sorted within hours same day and I am not even a BT customer (yet). Considering the size of BT, and the probably huge amount of emails BT'sCEO must have, this is quite exceptional.

My I clarify that of course I don't know him in anyway and I am not a BT shareholder or something like that.
