total broadband - no free phone....

[link to this post]

I've been with BT since 512kb ADSL, paid via credit card, then switched to direct debit now i have to switch to on the bill broadband, which to be fair its a minor pain but i dont mind switching payment methods as ultimately it benefits me.

What does tick me off is that the new BT option 3 package for existing customers wont get you the free snazzy phone for use with the router Ive never had a pack from bt as ive always used my own router, but apparently existing customers cannot get the phone and hvae to pay

Well, i haven't actually received it yet but I am assured I will be supplied with the Home Hub AND the phone completely FOC. It took a while to convince BT that this was a good idea but they saw the light in the end. To be fair, I'm not sure they knew what the rules were and somehow managed to do this for me 'manually'. As ever with a new product the Customer Services people are not fully up to speed. It may be better to hit them early before they develop hard and fast policies!! The number I called was 0800 800060 followed by numerous menus to finally get me thru to broadband sales.

cheers mate i might try that in a few days, have you or anyone tried the free router yet?? is it any good? I currently have a ZYXEL P650-H31 router which is rock solid, i dont use wireless have no need to and the zyxel give a great speed on my 2mb with great 12ms ping times and includes an SPI firewall NAT etc.

Is the BT total broadband free router any good?? anyone got some ping times to post and if the router is solid and has a good firewall??

I prob wont buy the bt phone if i cant get a free one and just buy a set of DECT phone which will work fine with it, although the router has to be plugged in and running the connection to use the voip, apparently i cant connect the new router to my current lan and use it that way. Has anyone tried this or can confirm this??

many thanks in advance.

I phoned the number and went through to Sales to be told I would get the phone free "more than likely". I asked to be transfered to the Broadband team to be told that as an exisiting customer, I would NOT get a free phone.
Emailed a complaint....

That does not seem to be the case. Max customer of only 3 months, used the weblink at the BT site and am set to receive the new Total Broadband Hub and Phone for free. Email also confirms this with a 7th July delivery date.

Yes, I have a 7th July delivery date too. From what I have read about the Home Hub it is a fairly sophisticated router with firmware upgradeable to allow for BT Vision in the future.

The hub itself has 2 ethernet ports and a USB port allowing you to connect 3 PCs PLUS any wireless ones. As far as adding additional equipment I can't imagine there is anything wrong with plugging in a 4 port ethernet switch to increase the ethernet connectivity to 5. Such a switch would cost around

Cheers, I actually meant the other way around with the router, and have my zyxel connect to the internet (run the connection) and just connect the bt router to the lan to allow the voip connectivity.

Im not a noob btw far from it!!

The setup and user guides just gave me the impression the router looks a bit pants tbh i HATE having to install noob software , ie. *home hub manager* software, i simply want to set up the hub via a web browser or by hyper terminal and connect to the net!

I dont wanna have to install some pants software that will inevitably [censored] up my pc.....
