Problem with Wireless Channel on Home Hub

[link to this post]

After saying in another thread I've had no problems with my hub I've now found one (typical !)..

My hub wireless is working fine on channel 1. But reading on this forum it seems a number of people are getting better results on channel 11. So I've gone into the hub and changed the channel to 11 only to find none of my devices can find the hub. It is almost like the hub has disappeared off of my wireless network. No matter what I do I cannot get any device (I've got 4 wireless devices) to connect to the hub when it is on channel 11. I've even used Netstumbler and it cannot find a wireless network when I'm using channel 11.

Anyone else had this problem ?

Thanks, Mark

But I don't think it is that - as when I switch back to channel 1 everything works fine again ..

It is really weird that I cannot use any other channel apart from 1..

On your wireless devices, such as your laptop, go to Network Connections in Control Panel. Right-click on your wireless network connection and click Properties. Click Configure. Go to the Advanced tab. Somewhere in that list is a place you can choose which channel you want the device to operate. Change it to 11 and do the same on the Hub and see if it works.

Otherwise you may be getting interference from other wireless users around you that also use channel 11. Or it may be interference from electrical/radio devices. Try moving the hub away from interfering devices (phone/monitor/microwave/hi-fi etc).

I don't think a wireless device can "fry" since you can use channel 1. All changing channels does it tune the signal on or off-course a bit. Like tuning into a radio station in the car; radio 14.2 might not sound too clear where as frequency 14.3 will for example.

Yeah sorry I mis read, I thought he put it onto channel 11 and it would not work again!! Just that happened to me. Hmm that does seem very strange, espcially doing a scan and it finding no other wireless access points. I think you might want to contact THD on 0845 600 7030

It's worth remembering that just because you can't find any networks on a channel does not mean there is nothing on the channel, there may well be interference stong enough to not only cause problems but also to be stronger than anything else on the channel network wise.

I am well aware, it was a big of a mistake that a microwave should operate on exactly the same frequency as wireless!

Microwave ovens, DECT telephones and 2.4Ghz video senders all operate on or around the same frequency as WiFi LANS. The specifications are such that all the devices should continue to operate in the presence of each other, although the range may be reduced due to the interference.

The best advice is to swap channels until you find one that gives the best results, however remember that some people do not leave their equipment on 24/7 so a good channel today may not be a good channel tomorrow

I used to have my other PC next to a microwave in the kitchen and the Wi-Fi signal was almost nothing until I moved it away. Simple metal and electronic devices can interfere with the signal strength (as they keep saying in the manuals ). Best to keep it away when possible for best results, and also for all your Wi-Fi stuff.
