sending email with own from address

[link to this post]

Hi, a friend is thinking of signing up to bt home broadband. He uses his own domain name for his email address but would use the bt smtp server. Now when my neighbour, a year ago, signed up to a bt businessoffice broadband account he found he could not send email through the smtp server unless his from address was his bt one. Eventually he managed to register his domain with bt as allowed.

Does anyoen know if this still goes on? Or does it only apply to business accounts? Does anyone here send email through the bt smtp server using their own replyto and from address? Easy to check just change the from address to [email protected] and send an email to yourself at your own address and see what happens.

Thanks a bunch

I'm not sure. Its one of those free domain forwarding things included in registering the domain. So each of his family have email with their name on the domain forwarded to their own accounts. I think his is ultimatley a clara.net pop3 mailbox which came with his office internet account, so he would not be able to use clara.net's smtp when hes on bt broadband as it only works in the office connected to clara.net connection.

But as I said he could have the email forwarded to a bt pop3 account it wouldn't make any difference, he would still want to send with his domain as the from address and need to use his isps smtp server, ie bt's if he signs up for bt.

Ahh I get you now!! Well he would not be able to put his domain name in the to address as I don't think BT/yahoo's mail servers allow that. But what he can do is have the to form displaying his @btinternet address and then in the reply to address have his domain name e-mail address.
You would really have to get soembody who has used this to deal with it.

I think BT/Yahoo's mail servers do allow you to set any valid from address... if they don't then sshh, as it works fine for me!

You can send email with any From: address on residential BT Broadband, but you will need to enable SMTP Authentication using your BTinternet email address and password. Details here.

BT Business Broadband users have to register domains in order to send using something other than their BTconnect email address. Details here.

Edited to correct first URL and spacing...

Likewise I've sent From: several different domain names using BT Yahoo. Indeed, the BTY webmail client has a system that allows you to set up other addresses. You have to verify that you can receive via the new address, then you can select which email address to show as the From: address using a simple pull-down menu. I found this very helpful for working at home as I could send using my BT account with my work email address as the From adress. Easier than using the not very reliable webmail system my employer used!

Oh good, that does sound hopefull. Rather annoyingly strange the the business accounts would be more restricted than home accounts, you'd think they would be less likely to send spam? But anyway. I will pass on the good news.

Thank you very much for the replies

Aha, this is exactly the problem I have discovered. I have just had a BT ADSL connection through work, from BT Global Services.

I found that by connecting my home computer to the ADSL via a router, I can happily receive my emails from my Freeserve email addresses I have used for years. However I cannot send emails, despite having poked several BT SMTP server names in my outgoing mail server setting in Outlook. I always get this the mail returned with this error

:- No transport provider was available for delivery to this recipient.

Any clues as to what I need to put in my SMTP outgoing server values?
