Which speed?

[link to this post]

Hub Manager tells me I'm connected at 5,088 Kbps. Both Thinkbroadband and Speedtest.net's speed checks say it's around 1Mb. Are they reporting different things?

The Hub manager shows the connection speed between your computer and the exchange.

Thinkbroadband and Speedtest show the actual download speed achieved and will vary during the day due to various factors.

Do a test at http://217.35.209.142/

This will show:-

1. The connection speed eg 5088Kbps
2. The IP profile (throttling by the exchange). Should be 4000Kbps at the above connection speed.
3. The actual download speed. Should be just below 4000Kbps.

To get the IP profile of 4000Kbps you have to maintain your connection speed of 5088 Kbps for at least 3 days.

Thanks - first time of trying gave me an error message saying the phone number I put in didn't match their records! Worked second time though.

It gave the following results:

IP profile 4000
DSL up 448
DSL down 6528
Actual IP throughput 3686.

Does that looks right?

Looking at this table
http://www.thinkbroadband.com/news/2622-another-max-product-update.html
If you can hold the connection of 6528Kbps (for 3 days) your IP profile should go even higher to 5500Kbps hopefully, giving an actual download of just below that.
