I upgraded to BT 8 meg 3 months ago having been on the previous BT 1 meg and then 2 meg. I've had no problems with BT broadband prior to the upgrade and when my shinny new BTHomehub arrived I consigned my trusty but old D-Link 504 to the attic.
Now I accept that many people have had no problems but my experience has been terrible. The hub has been showing good attenuation and SNR. However its re-syncs between 4 and 20 times a day. Some days it becomes unusable for an hour as it continually resyncs. The speed varies widely but averages around 4000 which I would be happy with if it stayed up. The worse thing about the wholes experience to date is not that it doesn't work but that it nearly works. Enough for me to think that if I fiddle it might come good after all. So I've rewired with cat 5 cable, installed an ADSL faceplate, installed DMT (although I can't use that since 6226), looked for electrical interference, trawled this forum and I've had email conversation with BT India (who have been fairly dismal). All to no avail.
Last night was the final straw. Get home to be harangued by two daughters who can't use MSN, son who can't play some game on-line and wife who cant email. The hub connection wouldn't sync. So in the bin it went. Retrieved the trusty DSL-504 from the attic and plugged it in. I connected at 6080 kbps and it stayed sync'd all evening.
It was interesting to see that the Hub showed an SNR of 16 whereas the 504 is showing 7. Was the hub lying? Its early days yet and I will see how we get on over the next week and maybe problems will resurface.
I retrieved the hub from the dustbin this morning. I might try to get BT to send me a new one and try again. That said why bother. I have the BT VOIP phone but don't use it - as the main phone is virtually free and the house is full of mobiles and I use skype a lot. BT Vision - I don't think so - yet anyway. So maybe I'll go and upgrade the 504 to a shiny new D-Link model. But then the hub does look nice maybe with a little more fiddling a little more forum trawling...........................
