ok the support people helped me work out its a problem with my faceplate.. its the original one that was used with the engineer install back in 1999 /2000 so its been going a while

Got no idea what would cause it to fail now though

I cant find a replacement on the bt shop site can anyone point me in the right direction

Thanks in advance

Well if its a problem with your faceplate a BT Engineer will have to be booked out to fit a new one free of charge as you don't own it.

Since its a new one the socket you will have get a screw driver and take off the bottom half. Behind that is another socket plug your equipment into their and do a speedtest and post it back here.

yup did that and am syncing at 2700mbps rather than 480 by plugging directly into the socket behind the faceplate.

The guy in BT i talked to said it was out of warranty and I would have to replace it because it was installed so long ago
hehe

Well I am afraid that you are under no need to replace it to my knowledge. In fact if you replace it, you are committing a criminal offence tampering with the UK telephone system and risk a fine of several thousand pounds and being banned from using the UK telephone system.

Somebody on here will know if the faceplate is covered but problem is only BT have the faceplates you need so it will be impossible to get them anywhere else.

Nah you cant buy them at all. The ADSL Faceplate you talk about is a service specific plate or SSSP. BT can also fit these got one myself.

The original engineer installs effectively became self installs from an administrative point of view some years ago , think it was after the 1Mbits home became available and people regraded. As part of the T&C's the USB modems and I believe the SSFP became the property of the end user.
As has been indicated, it is perfectly acceptable for the end user to change the SSFP
