Home Hub Questions

[link to this post]

My sister has joined BT Broadband and she received her Hub a few days ago. This worked fine for a few days but a power cut put stop to that. When the power came back on the hubs 5 lights kept flashing, after about 20 minutes she phoned the help line and a lady told her to pull the power line and wait for 60 seconds. A reboot still left the lights flashing and the lady then said that it will take a few hours as the hub was updating. Is this normal that the hub could go offline for hours and is it possible to change it to WPA as at the moment it's set on WEP.

No its not normal and yes you can change it to WPA, WPA2 as well if you wish but less support for older devices.

Sounds like the hub has been bricked by the powercut.

Thanks Paul, my experience of BT is zero as I'm with another ISP, assuming that she gets a replacement unit (and knowing my sister she will !!) what is the address for the hub to change the encryption.
Thanks

Could try pressing the wirelwess association button at the back right of the hub for 20 seconds. This is normally done for resetting the hub. Unfortunately, Paul is probably right - but worth a try.

Also, use the BT wireless connection manager to edit the hub to WPA.

Well, amazingly the hub has returned to 3 lights (after 2 hours) and my sister is back online (I got her to ping BBC. She commented that you've gotta have faith (as George M says). Thanks for your help and I'm sure that I'll be asking more questions as I 'talk' to the hub.
Dave

I have a lot of work ahead as I set her machine up on Tesco (her choice) last year and when I asked her today to run Adaware she said that it told her that it is 306 days out of date!!!!! Oh and the registration on her antivirus is also out of date

Yeah, well the VOIP is charged at the same rates as normal telecommunications with BT. It gievs you free evening and weekend calls to 01 & 02 numbers only. Its essentially option 1 landline but with some cheaper calls here and there.

You know your sister could call up BT and get mobile numbers blocked from the landline but she can use it to call a landline forgotten how. Likewise with the VOIP once she finds mobile calls blocked on the landline use the VOIP phone its even easier just login to the account online and block it there!
